Ricky Duran Mayberry Sr. 1957 - 2008

RUSSELL — Ricky Duran Mayberry Sr., 51, died Nov. 27 at the Russell Regional Hospital, after a courageous battle against cancer. He was born Nov. 14, 1957, in Borger, Texas, the son of Jerry and Alta (Golden) Mayberry. In the third grade, Ricky and his family moved to Plainville, Great Bend and then Russell. He lived most of his life in the Russell area, but also lived in Oklahoma and Nebraska for a short time.

He was united in marriage to Susan Naylor on Sept. 19, 1980, in Clay Center, Neb. This union was blessed with three children; Ricky Jr., Cassandra and Jessica.

Ricky has worked in the oil field most of his life. He was mainly a pulling unit operator. He worked for Don Karst Well Service, Doc’s Well Service and Mid-Kan.

Ricky attended the Bunker Hill United Methodist Church. He also was a very active member in The Men MC. – Kansas Chapter. Spending time with his family and friends was very important to Ricky. He was a very social person who enjoyed riding his Harley and having barbeques with family and friends.

Surviving family include his wife of 28 years, Susan, of the home; three children, Ricky Jr. and wife Connie, Cassandra Mayberry and Jessica Mayberry, all of Russell; seven brothers, Jerry Don Mayberry and Haley Mayberry of Borger, Texas, Ronny Jo Mayberry and Jerry Terral both of Woodward, Okla., Terral Mayberry of Stinnett, Texas, Eugene Blanke of Claremore, Okla. and David Blanke of St. Louis, Mo.; four sisters, Lynn (Mayberry) Smith of Hoisington, Heidi Blanke of Baldwin, Mo., Starr Gates of Wichita and Kelly Shelton of Dallas, Texas; stepfather, Kenneth Blanke of Russell; four grandchildren and numerous distant family members. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

Celebration of Ricky’s Life will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell with the Rev. Earl Haggard officiating. Interment will follow at Russell City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday at the mortuary. A memorial has been established as the Ricky Mayberry Memorial Fund. Contributions and condolences may be left with the mortuary. Melvin C. Fehrenbacher 1942 – 2008

TOPEKA — Melvin C. Fehrenbacher, 66, passed away Nov. 26, doing what he loved, riding his Harley-Davidson. He was born Sept. 21, 1942, in Stafford County, the son of Wayne Fehrenbacher and Betty Richardson Fehrenbacher. He graduated from the Carl Junction High School in Missouri in 1961. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Cuban Crisis and was stationed in Guantonomo Bay. He was previously married three times, including to Carolyn Kaye Skulavik, and Sharon Kay Croft for over 30 years. He was a member of the American Veterans Motorcycle Club.

He is survived by two sons, Michael Fehrenbacher of Missouri and John Fehrenbacher of Topeka; two daughters, Michelle Garrison of Topeka and Rebecca Dodds and her husband Christopher of Redbank, N.J.; two brothers, Lawrence D. Fehrenbacher of Cleveland, Ohio, and Joseph Fehrenbacher of Wichita; three sisters, Helen Skidmore and Anna Lucida, both of Atchison, and Teresa Ukins of Great Bend; and five grandchildren, Stephany, Sabrina, Brandon, Spencer and Megan.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the Davidson Funeral Home in Topeka. Melvin will lie in state from noon to 9 p.m. on Monday, with family visitation from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment services will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at the St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Seward. Memorials may be made to the Melvin Fehrenbacher Memorial Fund and sent in care of the funeral home.

Sister Hermina Oeding, OP 1916 – 2008

Sister Hermina Oeding, 91, died Nov. 27 at the Dominican Sisters’ convent infirmary in Great Bend. Born Dec. 7, 1916, in Willowdale as Mary Anna Oeding, she was the daughter of the late Herman and Mary Heckenkamp Oeding. She entered the Dominican Sisters’ Community on July 19, 1931, and pronounced her first vows on Aug. 20, 1934. She celebrated 70 years of religious profession in 2004.

Sister Hermina began her lifelong ministry as a teacher in 1934 in Fowler. She taught first through eighth grades for nearly 60 years in various schools in Kansas and Nebraska. In many of these parochial elementary schools she was both teacher and principal. After 1993 when she returned to the motherhouse in Great Bend, she served in various duties, especially as chauffeur for the sisters at the motherhouse. She has been in the convent infirmary since 2002.

Sister Hermina is survived by her Dominican Sisters’ Community; and two brothers and two sisters, Joseph of Kingman, Lawrence of Spivey, Anna Wright of Council Grove and Martha Rohlman of Kingman.

Sister Hermina’s body will be brought to the hospitality area of the Dominican Chapel of the Plains, 3600 Broadway, in Great Bend, at 4 p.m. today, where it will lie in state until the Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, with the Rev. Benjamin Dande MSFS officiating. A wake service will be held at 5 p.m. on Monday. Burial will be in the Sisters’ Resurrection Cemetery. Both the wake and the funeral will be held at the convent. Memorials in honor of Sister Hermina may be sent to Dominican Sisters Ministry Fund, Office of Mission and Ministry, 3600 Broadway, Great Bend, KS 67530. Friends may call at the convent from 9 a.m. until the time of the wake service at 5 p.m. on Monday.

Kenneth W. Showalter 1912 - 2008

LARNED — Kenneth W. Showalter, 96, died Nov. 21 at Canon City, Colo. Born Oct. 5, 1912, in Sylvia, he was the son of David Milton and Mary Matilda Hofen Showalter. A longtime resident of Larned, he was the owner and operator of Ken Photos in Pawnee County. On Aug. 7, 1935, he married Glenna Pauline Dupree in Larned. She died May 10, 1978.

Mr. Showalter was a member of the United Methodist Church and Methodist Men, both of Larned, and Radium, and the Ash Valley Granger.

Survivors include a son, David and wife Cheryl, of Canon City, Colo.; a daughter, Mrs. Roland (Evelyn) Reece of Wichita; six grandchildren, Donna and Don Stejskal of Burdett, Deana and Ivan Roberts of Pawnee Rock, Daryl and Geri Reece of Olathe, Laura and Stephen Roberts of Harker Heights, Texas, Kathy and Doug Beach of Salida, Colo., and Kristin and Gerald Tryhane of Farmington, N.M.; 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Virgil, Harley and Wilford; and three sisters, Minnie Thompson, Lorene Jennings and Hazel.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Beckwith Mortuary Chapel in Larned with the Rev. Bob Gleason presiding. Burial will be at the Larned Cemetery. Friends may visit from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, with the family present from 5 to 8 p.m., at the mortuary. Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church or United Methodist Youthville, both of Larned, or the Radium Senior Center, all in care of the mortuary.

Kenneth “K.C.” Jackson 1930 – 2008

SYLVAN GROVE — Kenneth “K.C.” Jackson, 78, died Nov. 24. He was born May 1, 1930, at Mountain View, Okla. He had been the Sylvan Grove Public School District superintendent.

Survivors include his wife, Wynona C. Jackson, of Sylvan Grove; four sons, Kenneth D. Jackson of Oklahoma City, Okla., Stevan Jackson of Gulf Breeze, Fla., Craig Jackson of Russell and Jeffrey Jackson of Hutchinson; a daughter, Teresa Jackson of Spring, Texas; a brother, Clyde Jackson, Jr., of Buffalo, Okla.; a sister, Jean Daniels of Mustang, Okla.; 23 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the Sylvan Grove High School gym. Burial will be at the Sylvan Grove City Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the charity or organization of the donor’s choice.

Lillian D. Papay 1922 - 2008

Lillian D. Papay, 86, of Dimmitt, Texas, and formerly of Great Bend, passed away Nov .23 in Dimmitt. Lillian was born June 24, 1922, to Gerd and Geneva Steincamp in Ripley, Okla. She was a graduate of Ripley High School. She married Emit Papay on April 18, 1940, in Aurora, Colo. He died on July 18, 1998. She was a telephone operator for Bell Telephone in Great Bend. She was a Signal Corps operator during World War II in Pensacola, Fla. She and her husband were owners of Central Transport Inc. in Great Bend for 25 years.

Mrs. Papay was a member of the First Christian Church of Great Bend.

She served as a Republican co-chairman for Barton County; she was Sen. Bob Dole’s State Campaign Co-Chairperson; in 1988 she was the Republican National Convention Delegate for Kansas; in 1989 she was a Soroptimist Woman of Distinction. Most recently she served as Mayor of Great Bend from 1997-1999. She was elected to the Kansas State Senate in 1992 and served through 1996.

She is survived by her daughter Carol Lust and husband Rex of Dimmitt; three granddaughters, Rebecca Schroeder of McKinney, Texas, Wendy Lust of Sunray, Texas, and Nicole Lentz of Kansas City, Kan.; three grandsons, Cory Lust of Sunray, Cameron Lust of Lubbock, Texas, and Brett Jarmer of Topeka; one great-granddaughter Sage Lust of Sunray; two great-grandsons, Cray and Cutter Lust, both of Sunray; two sisters, Martha Steincamp and Marilyn Shetlar, both of Leawood; a loving friend, Shellie Collins of Dimmitt; and a loving friend and caretaker, Gloria Montoya, of Dimmitt.

She is preceded in death by her husband Emit Papay; her parents; two infant sisters; and three brothers, Harold, Charles and Robert Steincamp.

Funeral service will take place at 2 p.m. on Friday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend, with the Rev. William F. Johnson officiating. Interment will be in Great Bend Cemetery. Visitation is from 9 a.m. to service time on Friday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Hospice Cares of Dimmitt, Susan G. James “Jake” Durall 1940 - 2008

HAYS — James “Jake” Durall, 68, died Nov. 23 at his home in Hays. Born Sept. 10, 1940, in Sterling, he was the son of Ferrol J. and Mildred K. “Mimmie” (Haas) Durall. He attended Pawnee Rock High School and was a 1958 graduate of St. Joseph Military Academy in Hays. On Aug. 12, 1961, he married Frances “Fritz” (Von Lintel) in Amarillo, Texas. He worked for the Kansas State Highway Commission, the Hays Police Department and the Ellis County Sheriff’s Department. In 1976 he was an owner/operator truck driver, hauling cattle and grain until he retired in 2003.

Mr. Durall was a veteran of the United States Air Force. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays.

Survivors include his wife, Francis “Fritz” Durall, of the home; two sons, Bill Durall and Jeff Durall, both of Hays; two brothers, Ed Durall of Winter Springs, Fla., and Mike Durall of Boulder, Colo.; and a grandson, Casey Durall of Iowa Park, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. today at Cline Mortuary in Hays. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays. Burial will be at the St. Joseph Cemetery in Hays with military honors by the Hays Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9076. Friends may visit from 5 to 9 p.m. today and from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. on Wednesday, all at the funeral home. Eleanor Elizabeth “Ellie” Petrich 1926 - 2008

CLAFLIN — Eleanor Elizabeth “Ellie” Petrich, 82, died Nov. 22 at Hospice House, Hutchinson. She was born Aug. 31, 1926, at Manhattan, the daughter of Roy and Elizabeth (Hassebroek) Nixon. She married Bill Petrich on Aug. 20, 1948, at Manhattan. He preceded her in death on Jan. 21, 1992. A homemaker, she was a Claflin resident since 1955, coming from Manhattan.

Mrs. Petrich was a member of the United Methodist Church and UMW of Claflin. She was a longtime bloodmobile chairperson and served on other charities. She served on the Independent Township Library Board and was a longtime member of the Claflin Golf Club.

Survivors include two daughters, Peggy Thome and her husband Tom of Aiken, S.C., and Jane Miller and her husband Tony of Independence, Mo.; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Russell and Beryl Nixon.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Claflin, with the Rev. Gene Langhofer officiating. A private burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Claflin Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, Hoisington. The casket will remain closed. Letha Irene (Hughard) Dixon 1919 - 2008

SPRINGVIEW, Neb. — Letha Irene (Hughart) Dixon was born Nov. 24, 1919, to Jeptha and Mable (Jones) Hughart in Witcherville, Ark. She passed away Nov. 19, at her ranch home near Springview, Neb., at the age of 88 years, 11 months and 26 days. Irene attended school in Greenwood, Ark., in her early years and then South Western Bible College in Enid, Okla. She remembered her personal acceptance of Christ as her Savior at age eight and enjoyed re-telling it to her family and others many times.

Irene met her lifetime companion, Howard Dixon, in Bible College and they were married on July 13, 1941. Irene planned her home church wedding in detail. She hand-sewed her wedding dress, and the bridesmaid dress for her sister, as well as cut and sewed the dresses for four other bridesmaids; her sewing room was her haven. Her four daughters were always well-dressed in their growing up years. A son also graced this marriage.

Howard and Irene set up housekeeping in Twin Falls, Idaho. The local pastor opened an apartment in their private home. The next move was to Mountain View, Ark. This was their first full-time pastorate. They also pastored in Big Flat, Ark. Howard returned to college in Pasadena, Calif., where they lived three years. Their next pastorate took them to Westerville, Neb. followed by Wood Lake, Neb.

Irene made many close friendships with her good spirit and was told recently by one of the ladies, “you were my role model.”

When the family was raised and married, Irene had time to start a new hobby, oil painting. This again became her chief pastime.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents and one sister. She leaves to mourn her passing her husband, Howard, four daughters, Ruth Davidson and husband Paul of Barneveld, N.Y., Mary Keller and husband Paul of Great Bend, Beverly Piper and husband Warren of Lincoln, Neb., and Janice Sykes and husband Jerry of Kansas City; one son, Todd Dixon and wife Tracy of Lincoln, Neb.; four sisters, Ilene Christian and husband Nolan of Tulsa, Okla., Dorotha Albritton and husband Bill of Fort Smith, Ark., Norma Johnson, and Wilma Jo Hughes and husband Jack, all of Fort Smith, Ark.; nine grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; along with nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Saturday at Hoch Funeral Home in Ainsworth, Neb., with Pastors Jesse Meduna, Dwight Sandoz and Gary Graesser officiating. Music was provided by Carolyn Krausch. “I’ve Got a Mansion” was sung by Irene's daughters, Ruth, Mary and Beverly, as well as “The Holy City,” sung by her granddaughter, Christine Greco. Piano selections were also played as a tribute to Irene by her daughter, Mary. Casket bearers were Ben Weston, Paul Davidson, Paul Keller, Warren Piper, Jerry Sykes and Todd Dixon. Honorary casket bearers were Kevin Schoettger, Ivan Farlin, Orrin Thiede, Frank Williams, Tim Cook, Carlyle “Buz” Cook, Chet Willkins and Dallas Krausch. Interment was at the Ainsworth Cemetery. Memorials have been suggested to the donor’s choice in her name.

Winifred Grace Weatherbee 1921 - 2008

HUTCHINSON — Winifred Grace Weatherbee, 87, died on Nov. 23 at Thorne Care Center, Wesley Towers in Hutchinson. She was born on Oct. 31, 1921, in rural Rice County, the daughter of Frederick and Susanna Dressel Altenbaumer. She attended Sunny Four Elementary School in rural Rice County and graduated from Bushton High School. She married Kenneth F. Weatherbee on June 4, 1940, at her parents’ home in rural Rice County. He survives. A longtime Great Bend resident, moving to Hutchinson in 1986, she was a secretary at the Great Bend First United Methodist Church and a homemaker.

Mrs Weatherbee was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Hutchinson. She was a Retired and Senior Volunteer Program volunteer.

She is survived by a son, Larry Weatherbee and wife Sandra of Longwood, Fla.; two daughters, Diana Weatherbee of Durham, N.C., and Cheryl Harmon and husband Ken of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Chris and Anne Harmon of Crown Point, Ind., Garrick and Nichelle Harmon of Tallinn, Estonia, Dawn Weatherbee and Ryan and Maria Weatherbee, all of Longwood; great-grandchildren, Elyse, Caleb and Elena Harmon of Tallinn, Estonia, Chloe Harmon of Crown Point and Autumn Weatherbee of Longwood. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Helen Downing and two brothers, Leonard and Ray Altenbaumer.

Friends may sign the book and call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday at Elliott Mortuary in Hutchinson. Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday at the Wesley Towers Chapel. She will be cremated, with a memorial service and burial at a later date. Ella (Bruner) Lanman 1916 - 2008

PALMER, Alaska — Ella (Bruner) Lanman, beloved of many, passed away on Oct. 13 in Palmer, Alaska. Ella Blanche Bruner was born on April 26, 1916, to Wilbert D. and Ann E. Bruner on their farm near Dacoma, Okla. She was the ninth of 10 children. She attended school in both Dacoma and Alva, Okla., and upon graduation from high school went to Anderson, Ind., to attend college. Her stay there was short. Silbert Lanman had written that he had been taking female teachers to teachers’ meetings and Ella came home to “protect her interests.” They were married on July 3, 1937.

They spent the next several years moving from Homestead to Freedom to Clinton back to Dacoma and finally to Capron, Okla., where they lived for the next 17 years. During this time, Ella finished her college degree and taught everything from kindergarten to business education. She also had time to squeeze in the births of five children. The Lanmans sojourned to Kansas.  While there, Ella finished a degree in library science. After teaching school in both Hudson and Fowler, Ella and Silbert moved to Houston, Texas, to work at Gulf Coast Bible College in 1972. Ella spent many happy hours working alongside dear friend Ruth Kirks in the library.

The Lanmans retired to Alva, Okla., in 1981.  Ella and Silbert celebrated their 50th anniversary in June of 1987. Silbert passed away six months later.

Ella lived in Hutchinson, with her sister, Irma Schrader, for a number of years, and in 2001 she moved to Alaska to live with daughter, Janet.

Ella is renowned for her gentle, loving, kindness. She will be remembered by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren who love and cherish her memory and also by adoring nieces, nephews, friends of her children (some of whom thought of her as a second mother), friends and family.

Ella was preceded in death by her husband, daughter Jacqueline Ann Copeland, grandson Kevin Jack Coffey and great-grandson Brian Wayne Coffey.

She is survived by daughters Charlotte Teichmann and husband Galen of Great Bend, Janet Lanman of Palmer, Alaska, and Gael Irvine and husband Joe of Palmer, Alaska; and son Kim Bert Lanman and wife Dena of Claremore, Okla. Surviving grandchildren include Robert Coffey and daughter Tessa of Palmer, Alaska, and son Robert Sharp, wife Ranae and children Evan, Peyton and Joel of Albuquerque, N.M.; Brian Coffey, wife Wendy and children Jarrod and Valinda of Augusta, Ga.; Christy Smith, husband Eric and son Ashton of Great Bend;  Jennifer Ankerholz , husband Dirk, son Dalen, and daughter Kendyll of Clearwater; Scot Irvine of Palmer, Alaska; Rachel Lanman of Medellin, Colombia; and Abby Lanman of Oklahoma City, Okla. She is also survived by a sister, Irma Schrader, and brother, James Bruner, both of Hutchinson.

A memorial service to celebrate Ella’s life will be held at the Alva, Okla., Church of God at 2 p.m. on Friday with Kim Lanman officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mid-America Christian University Library, 3500 SW 119th St., Oklahoma City, OK, 73710. Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.lanmanmemorials.com.

Erwin “Ernie” L. Honomichl 1943 - 2008

LARNED — Erwin “Ernie” L. Honomichl, 65, died Nov. 20 at Promise Regional Medical Center in Hutchinson. He was born Aug. 24, 1943, in Lucas, the son of Edwin Adolph and Doris May Rezabek Honomichl. On Dec. 5, 1964, he married Judy A. Mohler at Larned. She survives. A Larned resident since 1963, moving from Lincoln, he was a retired farm equipment salesman.

Mr. Honomichl was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Larned.

HOISINGTON — Robert L. Deutsch, 71, died Nov. 21 at his Hoisington residence. Born April 12, 1937, at Hoisington, he was the son of Frederick and Emelia “Bitter” Deutsch. He was retired from work for the City of Hoisington and the Kansas State Highway Department. He was a lifetime resident of the Hoisington-Susank area.

Mr. Deutsch was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church, Hoisington.

Survivors include two brothers, J.L. Deutsch of Hoisington and Dean Deutsch of Hutchinson; and four sisters, Helena Mai and Irene Bitter, both of Hoisington, Theresa Dumler of Russell and Wilma Haesemeyer of Hutchinson. He was preceded in death by his parents and six brothers, Armin, Raymond, Leland, Edward, Edwin and Paul Deutsch.

Funeral service was at 2 p.m. Saturday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, Hoisington, with the Rev. Mark Lovett officiating. Burial was at St. John Lutheran Cemetery, Susank. Ralph Elwood Trickey 1924 - 2008

Ralph Elwood Trickey, 84, of Great Bend, formerly of Denver, Colo., died Nov. 18 at Central Kansas Medical Center, Great Bend. He was born July 25, 1924, at Cape Girardeau, Mo., the son of Irl Everett and Julia Ida (Marion) Trickey. He had been a resident of Great Bend for the last four years. He was a graduate of Cape Girardeau (Mo.) High School. He was a career military man, entering the service in 1943. He received the Bronze Star and the Army Commendation Medal. Ralph retired and started another career with Sears, where he retired as well. He enjoyed restoring automobiles.

Mr. Trickey was a life member of the VFW, the American Legion and the Elks Lodge.

Survivors include two daughters-in-law, Christine Trickey of Great Bend and Colleen Trickey of Torrance, Calif.; a brother, Woodrow Trickey of Louisiana; three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his three sons, Marcus Ralph Trickey, Glenn Everett Trickey and the Rev. Daniel Rawlins Trickey.

HOISINGTON — Celene S. Hester, 91, died Nov. 21 at Country Place Home Plus, Hoisington. She was born Oct. 5, 1917, at Bazine, the daughter of Elmer and Harriet E. (Fairbanks) Cooley. She married Tom T. (Pete) Hester on March 22, 1943, at Great Bend. He died April 23, 1973. She was a homemaker and a Hoisington resident since 1976, coming from the farm near the Galatia/Olmitz area.

Survivors include a daughter, Joleen Steinert, and her husband Duane, of Olmitz; two grandchildren, Darrin Steinert and Shelley Snyder; and five great-grandchildren, Kendall and Dalton Steinert and Summer, Nicholas and Chance Snyder. She was preceded in death by an infant son, Terry Lee Hester, three brothers, Floyd, Dean and Thayne Cooley, and a sister, Elva Cunningham.

BURDETT — Donna Jean Thompson, 66, died Nov. 19 at Larned Healthcare Center, Larned. Born Feb. 11, 1942, in Hutchinson, she was the daughter of Alfred William and Frieda Viola Halling Yust. A longtime resident of Burdett, she was a cosmetologist, homemaker and harvester. She married James “Jim” M. Thompson on Dec. 18, 1960, in Burdett. He survives.

Mrs. Thompson was baptized in the Church of the Nazarene in Larned and later became active in the Faith Fellowship Church near Gray.

Survivors include her husband, Jim Thompson; two sons, James Meredith and wife Eileen of Burdett and William Hensen and wife Paula of Hesston; a daughter, Desiree Linnea Simon and husband Tim of Morland; three sisters, Carol Bowlus, Virginia Brownlee and Phyllis Amend, all of Larned; a brother, Wayne Yust of North Branch, Minn.; eight grandchildren, Dustin and Mandi Thompson, Chantelle, Kylie and Jarrett Simon, and Grace, Caleb and Ethan Thompson; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Calista Alma (Ochs) Moore 1912 - 2008

HOISINGTON — Calista Alma (Ochs) Moore was born on March 3, 1912, and entered everlasting life on Nov. 12. She was born and raised in Hoisington and lived there from 1942 until the family home was destroyed by a tornado in 2001. Since 2001 she has lived in Phoenix, Ariz., with her daughter and son-in-law.

Survivors include her sister, Louise Johnson, of Marquette; two sons, James of Kansas City and Thomas of Hoisington; a daughter, Ann of Phoenix and grandchildren James Jr. of St. Paul, Kan., Jennifer of Kansas City, Stephanie of Gardner, and John Epley and Ruthie Smith of Phoenix. She is also survived by six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wesley, and four brothers, Martin, Vernon, Nathan and Tillman.

Private graveside services will be held in Hoisington at a later date.

Opal Ingersoll 1916 - 2008

DODGE CITY — Opal Ingersoll, 92, died Nov. 18 at Presbyterian Manor of the Plains, Dodge City. She was born Aug. 10, 1916, at Kanona, the daughter of Milton and Jennie Weir Bisbee. On Aug. 2, 1938, she married Damon Ingersoll at Claflin. He preceded her in death on May 22, 1993.

A Dodge City resident since 1998, moving from Claflin, she was a teacher with the Claflin Schools for 20 years, retiring in 1981.

Mrs. Ingersoll was a member of the Claflin United Methodist Church, where she was very involved in many church activities and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors include her son, David, Annandale, Va.; two daughters, Carol Woydziak and husband Don, Dodge City, and Jean Mitchell, Newton; her sister, Twila Riebel, Great Bend; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Willard Bisbee.

Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, at the Claflin United Methodist Church, with Pastor Gene Langhofer presiding. GARFIELD — Albert L. Kelley, 69, died Nov. 18 at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital, Larned. He was born Jan. 23, 1939, in Stafford County. He married Janis Kay (Holloway) Kuhn. He was a retired construction contractor and welder, and also worked for the Cimarron Dairy in Cimarron. He had lived in Garfield since 2003. He was formerly of Kinsley. He served in the Kansas Air National Guard, and was a Vietnam War veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Janis, of the home; two sons, Joseph Kelley of Colorado and Albert J. Kelley of Lubbock, Texas; and one grandchild. He was preceded in death by a brother, Earl Kelley.

Kenneth E. Emerson 1935 - 2008

BOULDER, Colo. — Ken Emerson, 73, died Nov. 13 at the HospiceCare Center in Louisville, Colo. Ken was born Sept. 24, 1935, in Cherokee County, Kan., to George Murray and Stella Gladys Emerson. He grew up in Great Bend and graduated from Great Bend High School, later serving in the Kansas National Guard. He married Kathryn Cromer in 1957 and moved to Boulder in 1963. He worked for Jonkers and Harders, then owned and operated Emerson Painting and finally retired from the Millennium Hotel in 2007.

Survivors include his wife, Kathryn, and daughters Jennifer Love of Erie, Aimee Emerson of Boulder, son-in-law Eric Love of Erie and grandson Joshua Love of Erie. Ken was predeceased by his parents and brothers Raymond and Deane.

He will be remembered by family and friends as a hard-working man who loved to laugh. His commitment and dedication to his family were one of his greatest attributes and he will be missed greatly.

A very special thank you to his sister-in-law, friend and caregiver, Doris Ann Wegele. Thank you to Dr. Hunter Smith, whose tireless faith in Ken has meant so much to his family. Deanna L. Warren, 68, of Great Bend, died Nov. 17 at the Hospice House of Reno County in Hutchinson. Born Aug. 12, 1940, in Kansas City, Kan., she was the daughter of Ralph and Lois Teaverbaugh.

A resident of Great Bend since 2002, coming from Arlington, Texas, she worked in the loan and accounting departments for the Bank of America in Dallas, Texas. She was a caring mother and grandmother, devoting much of her love and time to her family.

Ms. Warren was baptized in the Methodist faith. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Social Sorority in Kansas City.

Edna F. Boger, 92, of Great Bend, died Nov. 17 at Central Kansas Medical Center, Great Bend. She was born Dec. 22, 1915, at Claflin, the daughter of Leonard and Donna (Ingersol) Van Fossen. She married Marcus Boger in 1934 at Great Bend. He survives. She was a homemaker, and a Great Bend resident for the past five years, coming from Hoisington.

Mrs. Boger was a member of the First United Methodist Church and UMW of Hoisington, and was a past Campfire Girl of Great Bend.

A resident of Great Bend most of his life, he was a roughneck in the oilfield and worked with heating and air conditioning maintenance. He enjoyed gardening and making Rosaries.

Mr. Sander was a member of the Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose.

Adolph Schrott 1918 - 2008

ALBERT — Adolph Schrott, 89, died Nov. 15 at Hutchinson. He was born Dec. 1, 1918, at Nekoma, the son of Edward and Mary Schinzel Schrott. He married Ella Weigt Lorenz on Jan. 17, 1947, at Madison. She died Sept. 4, 2003. A farmer, he lived in Nekoma for 29 years and then moved to Albert. He graduated from La Crosse High School in 1937. He was an Air Corps veteran, serving during World War II, earning the rank of staff sergeant.

Mr. Schrott was a member of American Legion Post No. 180 and of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, both in Great Bend.

Survivors include two daughters, Sharon Schneider and husband Randy of Eden Prairie, Minn., and Charlotte Wagner and husband Larry of Hutchinson; a brother, Johnny Schrott of Great Bend; seven grandchildren, Wendy Webster and husband, Seth, Shaun Schneider and wife, Ginny, Jeremy Wagner and wife, Heidi, Amy Wagner, Kelly Schneider, Brett Wagner and Bradley Wagner; one great-grandson, Kaleb Wagner; and a special friend, Maxine Korte of Monet, Mo. Eugene L. Campbell 1924 - 2008

ST. JOHN — Eugene L. Campbell, 84, of St. John, died Nov. 15 at Pratt Regional Medical Center. Born Oct. 22, 1924, at St. John, he was the son of Alma Lehi and Leona Bell (Davis) Campbell. On May 7, 1948, he married Ruth Lillian (Keller) at Ulysses. She preceded him in death. A lifelong resident of St. John, he was a former railroader, mechanic, owner-operator of Campbell’s Auto Service, and bus driver for St. John Schools. 

Mr. Campbell was a member of First Christian Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion, and was city fire chief, all of St. John. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include a daughter, Dianna L. Leonard and husband Jim, Overland Park, and a sister, Dena Mansel, St. John. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Lawrence and  Edward Campbell, and a sister, Opal Weil.

Marion Sharkey 1929 - 2008

WESKAN — Longtime Weskan resident Marion Sharkey, 79, died Nov. 11 at Hynes Hospice Center at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, in Wichita. She was born Aug. 10, 1929, at Anthony, the daughter of George and Bessie (Hughbanks) Asper. On Jan. 31, 1953, she and Jean H. Sharkey were married at the Baptist Church in Anthony.

Mrs. Sharkey was a member of the Weskan Baptist Church; Art Guild; Weskan Willing Workers and Glory Girls. She enjoyed oil painting, gardening, playing any card or board game, reading, theater, and took great joy in cooking new recipes for both family and friends.

Patti Handzo, 54, of Great Bend, died Nov. 14 at her residence. She was born Feb. 11, 1954, at Ponca City, Okla., the daughter of Charles J. and Virginia Decker Musser. She married Mark Handzo in 1971 at Riverside, Calif. They were later divorced. She had been a line worker for Phillips Industries, Salina, and later a coordinator for Protection One in Wichita. She had been a resident of Great Bend since 2005, coming from Wichita. She served in the U.S. Air Force.

Survivors include a sister, Barbara Hill and husband Don of Great Bend; her mother, Virginia Musser, of Great Bend; two nephews, Shawn Hogan and Steve Hogan, both of Salina; and a niece, Sherrie Hand of Belton, Mo. She was preceded in death by her father, Charles Musser.

WICHITA — Eugene R. “Jack” Schneider, 76, retired Cessna Aircraft Company experimental mechanic and U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, died Nov. 13. He was born in Great Bend, the son of Ervin and Mary Schneider.

Survivors include a son, Charles of Garrison, Iowa; daughters, Teresa Schneider and fiancé, Lee Klatt, and Sara Dwyer and husband, Sean, all of Wichita; sisters, Bernadine Linenberger, Sis Gorrell and Kathleen Bittner; brothers, Ervin and Marv; and granddaughter, Savannah Schneider. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lila.

Irma Marie Leitschuh Hackerott 1926 - 2008

PAWNEE ROCK — Irma Marie Leitschuh Hackerott, 82, passed away Nov. 13 after a courageous battle from a stroke and leukemia, at Hays Medical Center, Hays. Irma was born in New Douglas, Ill., on Aug. 27, 1926, to Clara and William Leitschuh. Irma’s early years in Illinois were spent working as one of the top-notch waitresses at the Garden’s Restaurant in Litchfield, Ill. After moving to Osborne, Kan., and working for Homer Clark Antiques, she learned a love of the antique business and upon meeting Kenneth “Shorty” Hackerott they married on May 22, 1970.

Preceding her in death were her father William Floren Leitschuh and her mother Clara Anna Marie Schneck Leitschuh, both of New Douglas, Ill.

Surviving Irma is her loving husband Kenneth “Shorty” Hackerott of Pawnee Rock; her daughter Shirley Bunger of Beloit; grandchildren Jeffrey William Bunger of Great Bend and Teri Lyn Bell and husband Bennett of Beloit; great-grandchildren Kyleigh Bunger of Hoisington, Brandwyn Bell and Derek Bell of Beloit; and one great-great-granddaughter Anna Marie Bunger of Hoisington. She is also survived by sisters Rolean Bailey of Lake Ozarks, Mo. and Ethel Korte and husband Larry of Highland, Ill.; and brothers Irvin Leitschuh of New Douglas, Ill., Clarence Leitschuh and wife Bernice of Lakeland, Fla., Delmer Leitschuh and wife Marilyn of Grandfork, Ill., and Loren Leitschuh and wife Janet of New Douglas, Ill.; and many nieces and nephews and many close and dear friends.

Irma donated her body to Science and Research of Kansas City, Mo., so at her request there will be no services. Memorial donations in her name are suggested to the local animal shelter of the donor’s choice.

Alice E. Stieben 1916 - 2008

OTIS — Alice E. Stieben, 92, of Otis, died Nov. 13 at Hays Medical Center, Hays. Born July 23, 1916, in rural Rush Center, she was the daughter John and Bertha (Skolaut) Weltmer. She married Norman W. Stieben on Aug. 10, 1941, at the United Methodist Church in Otis. He survives. She was a lifelong resident of Rush County. She was a bookkeeper at Stieben Service and Garage for more than 50 years before her retirement in 2004.

Mrs. Stieben was a member of the United Methodist Church and past chaplain for Goerlitz Schlegel VFW Auxiliary No. 9137, both of Otis.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, of Otis, include a son, Larry W. Stieben and his wife, Patty, of Otis; and two grandchildren, Tara Stieben and Hope Stieben, both of Otis. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Raymond Weltmer and Ralph Weltmer.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Otis, with the Rev. David Bolz officiating. Interment will be at the Otis Methodist Cemetery. Dixie D. Abbott 1919 - 2008

CLAFLIN — Dixie D. Abbott, 89, died Nov. 11 at Promise Regional Medical Center in Hutchinson. Born Aug. 17, 1919, in Phillipsburg, she was the daughter of Glen and Lila (Smith) Lane. She married Stewart N. Abbott on March 27, 1947, in Phillipsburg. He preceded her in death on Feb. 21, 2006. A longtime resident of Claflin, coming from Plainville and Phillipsburg, she was a postal service employee in Plainville, a school bus driver for the Claflin School system, and held various jobs in Claflin before her retirement in 1981.

Mrs. Abbott was a member of the United Methodist Church and UMW, both of Claflin. She was the supervising judge for Independent Township and the Barton County elections.

Survivors include two daughters, Diane Kreft and husband Leonard of Great Bend and Kathy Abbott of Salina; a brother, Alden Lane of Greeley, Colo.; a sister, Gwen Funston of Topeka; two grandchildren, Terry Kreft and wife Amy and Dana Dallen and husband Richard; and five great-grandchildren, Brittny, Taylor and Krista Dallen and Trustin and Alyssa Kreft. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Irwin Lane and Loren Lane.

FERGUSON, Mo. — Dixie M. Ewert, 81, died Nov. 12 at her residence here. She was born March 12, 1927, at Marionville, Mo., the daughter of Buel and Mattie Bastin Bledsoe. She married Howard D. “Sleepy” Ewert on May 10, 1947, in Wichita. He died Jan. 11, 2004. She was a homemaker and had lived in Ferguson since March 2008, coming from Great Bend.

Mrs. Ewert was a member of First United Methodist Church, TOPPS and Wagon Wheel Card Club, all of Great Bend.

Survivors include a son, Mike D. Ewert and wife Aprile of Joplin, Mo.; a daughter, Linda Heitland of Ferguson, Mo.; three grandchildren, Chris Heitland, Jessica Heitland and Hannah Ewert, and three great-grandchildren, Skyler Heitland, Kendyl Heitland and Reilly Dierdag. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Wallace and Buel Bledsoe, Jr., and a sister, Dorothy Giggy.

HAVILAND — Pastor Ken Allen Walker, 51, died Nov. 12 at his home in Haviland. He was born March 2, 1957, at Larned, the son of James and Elfreda Werhahn Walker. A resident of Haviland since 2003, formerly of Larned, he was the pastor of Garfield United Methodist Church and of Haviland United Methodist Church.

He belonged to the Kansas West Conference of the United Methodist Church.

Survivors include one son, Jared Walker, Ness City; one daughter, Nichole Walker, Larned; two grandchildren, Preston and Sydnee Stonebarger, and his dog, Murphy.

Norman G. Reiser 1929 - 2008

McPHERSON — Norman G. Reiser, 79, died Nov. 11 at Pleasant View Home of Inman. Born Feb. 28, 1929, in rural Ellinwood, he was the son of William and Josephine (Graf) Reiser. He attended the country schools near Ellinwood and graduated from Ellinwood High School. On May 22, 1955, he married Charlene Ann Lyon at the First Baptist Church in Sterling. She died on Jan. 8, 2006.

He worked for the gas station in Ellinwood, drove a water truck in Russell, was a roughneck for several different companies in the area and started with the National Cooperative Refinery Association in 1966 as a Pipeliner 2 for the Crude Pipeline in Ellinwood. In August of 1970 he moved to McPherson and became a yard utilityman. He retired on June 30, 1991, as an Operator 2 in the Alkylation Unit after 25 years of service for N.C.R.A. He had lived in McPherson County since 1970, moving from Ellinwood.

Mr. Reiser honorably served in the U.S. Army as a Pfc. T during the Korean War. He was a member of American Legion Post 24 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2715 Men’s Auxiliary, both in McPherson, and the Eagles in Great Bend.

Survivors include two daughters, Barbara McNichols of Inman and Brenda and Rick Shober of McPherson; a son, Dennis and Sonja Reiser of Hutchinson; a son-in-law, Tony Schartz of Great Bend; three brothers, Homer Reiser of Ellinwood, Howard and Wilma Reiser of Pryor, Okla. and Elvin and Doris Reiser of Artesia, N.M.; a sister, Hazel Kuehler of North Richland Hills, Texas; 10 grandchildren, Brian Schartz, Erin Schartz, Randi Shober, Chelsea Schartz, Brad Schartz, Kasey Shober, Leanne McNichols, Lucas McNichols, Allison Reiser and Kimberly Reiser; and two great-grandchildren, Emerald “Emmy” Shober and Brady Schartz. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Patricia Lynn “Patty” Schartz, and a brother, Junior Reiser.

Funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Friday at the First Christian Church in McPherson, with Phil Radatz officiating. Final resting place will be at the McPherson Cemetery with military honors presented by members of VFW Post 2715 and American Legion Post 24. Joe Howard Marbut 1942 - 2008

ELLINWOOD — Joe Howard Marbut, 66, died Nov. 10 at Ellinwood District Hospital. Born Aug. 2, 1942, in Verona, Mo., in Berry County, he was the son of Hershell Marbut and Blanche Baker Marbut.
A resident of Ellinwood for nine years, formerly of Great Bend, he was a truck driver for Rimarc Transportation and formerly of Gabbert and Jones Drilling. He retired in February 2008. He married Leona Buhrle on June 23, 1960, in Great Bend. He was a catfish fisherman.
Mr. Marbut was a United States Navy veteran and a member of the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; a daughter, Michele Edwards of Ellinwood; a son, Kenneth A. Marbut of Morristown, Tenn.; four brothers, Frederick Marbut of Joplin, Mo., Ted Marbut of Ellinwood, Allen Marbut of Hemet, Calif., and Roy Marbut of Albuquerque, N.M.; a sister, Juanita Edwards of Mesa, Ariz.; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by six brothers, Leon, Jesse, Curtis, Onan, James and Ralph Marbut.

Evelyn M. Gilchrist, 90, of Great Bend, died Nov. 9 at Broken Arrow Nursing Home, Broken Arrow, Okla. She was born Oct. 21, 1918, at Raymond, the daughter of Ernest T. and Margaret Inez (Gordon) Boy. She married Grover D. Gilchrist on July 23, 1939, at St. John. He died July 19, 1995. She lived in Raymond until November 1945, when she moved to a farm southwest of Colby. On June 18, 1984, she retired to Great Bend, where she lived until July 2003, when she moved to rural Bison to live with her daughter and son-in-law. She was a homemaker and a 1936 graduate of Raymond High School. She attended business school in Wichita for two years.
Mrs. Gilchrist was a member of Central Baptist Church, Great Bend. She enjoyed being with family and friends, and also enjoyed sewing and knitting.
Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Diller and her husband L. Glenn of Broken Arrow, Okla., and Beverly Juno and her husband Bernard of Bison; a sister, Ernestine McDaneld of Syracuse; eight grandchildren, Dona Diller, Brena Bellovich, Lanita Thomas, Kevin Diller, Janelle Maier, Shonda Smith, Tonya Robertson and Eric Juno; and 18 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

STERLING, Colo. — Victoria Kasselman, 62, of Sterling, Colo., passed away Nov. 9. She was born on March 8, 1946, in Tulsa, Okla., the daughter of August Michael and Lois Darlene (Orr) Klusener. She had lived in Sterling since 1998. Victoria married Jack R. Kasselman on June 16, 1964, in Great Bend. They later divorced. She was a homemaker, an avid reader and enjoyed her grandchildren. She was a free spirit and collected dragons.
Victoria is survived by her son, Patrick Lewis Kasselman and wife Renee of Ellinwood; daughter, Jacqueline Hamilton and husband Robert of Canon City, Colo.; brothers, Curtis Klusener and wife Donna, and Timothy Klusener, all of Great Bend; sisters, Mary Riemann and husband Ralph, and Kathi Hiney and husband Chris, all of Great Bend; and seven grandchildren, Joseph Kasselman, Danielle Barnett, Amber Kasselman, Dylan Wilson, John Hamilton, Larry Hamilton and Taylor Wilson. Rachel B. Williams 1919 - 2008

Rachel B. Williams, 89, of Great Bend, died Nov. 9 at Cherry Village Nursing Home, Great Bend. She was born March 13, 1919, at Duquoin, the daughter of Francis Lloyd and Annabelle Baker Mayberry. She married W.F. “Bud” Williams on Aug. 17, 1946, in Wichita. He died Aug. 28, 1988. Rachel was a registered nurse, working in Kingman for 17 years, then working at New Horizons in Valley Center for 15 years. She had been a resident of Great Bend since 1992.
Mrs. Williams was a life member of the Valley Center First Christian Church and Order of the Eastern Star, Valley Center. She was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary at Maize, and the Pearl Harbor Survivors-Spouses, Wichita.
Survivors include a niece, Pam Lewis, of Great Bend; a great-nephew, Jeremy Lewis and wife Melanie of Great Bend; and a cousin, Phyllis Christie and husband Bill of Stafford. She was preceded in death by a nephew, Chuck Lewis, and two sisters, Geraldine Lawson and Imogene Lewis.
Graveside service will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Hillside Cemetery in Sedgwick, with Pastor Chuck Smith officiating. TUCSON, Ariz. — Leroy Theodore Deines was born Nov. 2, 1920, in Russell, and died peacefully Nov. 3, 2008, in Tucson, Ariz. He was the eldest child of Rudolph and Anna Karst Deines. He attended rural schools in Kansas, and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1940. He served aboard submarines of both the Atlantic and Pacific Fleets, and retired with the rank of chief petty officer in 1964. He had a successful second career in real estate in Colorado and later in Scottsdale, Ariz. He owned and managed Orange Julius franchises for several years in Colorado. He completed his working years as a security guard for Salt River Project in Phoenix, Ariz.

Throughout his adult life Leroy was active in Masonic Lodges. He was awarded his 50-year pin by Green Valley Lodge No. 71 A.F. & A.M. in 2007. Leroy was a member of Shrine and served as Worthy Patron of Eastern Star. His interests following retirement included road trips, part-time RV travel, woodworking and restoration/repair of cars.

Leroy was married twice. His marriage to Annie Butler Ebert ended in divorce. He married Edith Ella Crawford Dieckman in 1960, and they spent 37 happy years together prior to Edith’s death in 1998. He is survived by his “kids,” Ronald (Marjorie) Dieckman of Tucson, Ariz., Gerald Dieckman of BellaVista, Ark., and Joan Adams of Lincoln, Neb. His sister Dorothy (Leroy) Borron of Tahlequah, Okla., and brother Leon Deines of Great Bend also survive him. He was PaPa to seven grandchildren: Mike, Jeff, Cindy, Chris, Cher, Erin and Coleen, and great-grandpa to 10: Jason, Derek, Jenny, Julieanne, Dylan, Michelle, Taylor, Lily, Cooper and Devin. Many cousins, nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by his great-grandson Derek.

Inurnment with military honors will be at Valley of the Sun Memorial Park, Chandler, Ariz., in late December.

Wayne H. Becker 1937 - 2008

Wayne H. Becker, 71, of Great Bend, died Nov. 5 at Central Kansas Medical Center, Great Bend. Born Sept. 3, 1937, in Great Bend, he was the son of Harold L. and Lois H. Gilbert Becker. He was a 1956 graduate of Great Bend High School. He married Karen Brenner on July 26, 1958. She was deceased. He then married Karen Cook on Oct. 19, 1996. She died on April 8, 2000. He married Karen A. Marmie Keller on May 4, 2001 in Great Bend. She survives. A lifetime resident of Great Bend, he was the chairman and chief executive officer of Becker Tire, Inc., and owner and CEO of W.H.B., Inc.

Mr. Becker was an Army Reserves veteran. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Great Bend, Tire Industry Association, Mid America Tire Dealers Association, Tire Retread Info Bureau, a board member of Farmers Bank and Trust, past president of Central Kansas Development, Inc., Great Bend Economic Development, Great Bend Chamber of Commerce, a member and supporter of Barton County 4-H, Boy Scouts of America, Barton County Historical Society, Kiowa Gun Club and Central Kansas Off Road Association.

Wayne delighted in spending as much time as possible with his family. He had a positive, enduring faith with a strong sense of Christian values. We loved him and will miss him.

Survivors include his wife, Karen Keller of the home; two sons, Rock W. Becker and wife Ivy of Great Bend and Ricky D. Becker and wife Johnita of Hutchinson; two daughters, Tammy A. Hayden and husband Randy of Great Bend and Teri K. Stephenson and husband Todd of Buhler; three sisters, Linda Sisson, and Jean Radke and husband Ron of Great Bend, and Ann Engel and husband Al of McPherson; two stepsons, Kevin L. Elmer David Mai 1924 - 2008

RUSSELL — Elmer David Mai, 84, of Russell died Nov. 5 at the Wheatland Nursing Center in Russell. Elmer was born Jan. 24, 1924, on the family farm southwest of Russell. He grew up in Russell and graduated from Russell High School in 1942. Elmer served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. He was deployed on an LST 667 in the South Pacific. After the war he returned to Russell. He was united in marriage to Lorraine Bender on Feb. 16, 1947, in St. John’s Lutheran Church in Russell. This union was blessed with two sons, Stephen and Gordon.

Elmer was a farmer and stockman most of his life. He also worked during the late 60s and early 70s as a welder for Charlie Bishop and during the 70s he worked for Shannon Appliance Store. He also completed an electronics course through the mail and then repaired radios and televisions.

Elmer was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church of Russell and was active in the church choir for more than 30 years. He was a life member and past commander of Russell American Legion Post No. 99, a life member of Russell VFW Post No. 6240, the Russell County Saddle Club and was a project leader in 4-H. Elmer was an inventive guy who could fix anything. He enjoyed working with wood and playing with his remote-controlled airplanes.

His surviving family include his wife of 61 years, Lorraine of the home; son Gordon Mai of Wilson; sister, Rozille Martin of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and three nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, son Stephen, brother Bernard Mai, one niece and one nephew.

Celebration of Elmer’s Life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John’s Lutheran Church of Russell with interment following at St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery. Military Rites will be conducted by the Russell VFW Post 6240 Honor Guard. LARNED — Mildred F. Skelton, 90, died Nov. 4 at Baptist Home in Springfield, Mo. Born Sept. 13, 1918, in Dolores, Colo., she was the daughter of Stanton and Anna May Davis Lovitt. On Nov. 20, 1938, she married Lemmie L. Skelton in La Crosse. He died on June 6, 1984. A longtime resident of Larned, she moved to Springfield, Mo., in 2002.

Mrs. Skelton was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include two daughters, Annette Osbern and husband Ed, of Springfield, Mo., and Linda Christiansen and husband Don, of Granbury, Texas; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

LINCOLN — Virginia June Lewick, 90, died Oct. 31. Born Oct. 18, 1918, in Lincoln, she was the daughter of Golden Morris and Maude Mannens. She married Daniel Clayton Lewick. She was a doctor’s assistant.

Survivors include her husband, of Lincoln; a son, Dan “Boone” Lewick of Salina; a daughter, Lleanna McReynolds of Lawrence; two sisters, Wanda Elliott of Augusta and Marilee Paynter of Otis; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Dee Morris.

Jack D. Clock 1932 - 2008

LARNED — Jack D. Clock, 76, died Nov. 3 at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital, Larned. He was born Jan. 6, 1932, in Freeport, Ill., the son of Erwin A. and Dessa Leverington Clock. He moved to Larned in April of 1952 and began farming northwest of Larned. He soon included real estate and insurance in his life’s work, eventually owning his own businesses as a licensed broker (GRI), insurance agent and a certified general appraiser (CGA). He was a volunteer for the Larned Fire Department for 42 years, retiring from the department as fire chief in 2006.

Mr. Clock was a member of First Christian Church, and past master of the Masonic Lodge No. 167, all of Larned; the Shriners, The Kansas Society of Farm Managers, and American Institute of Real Estate Appraisers. Some of his other interests included renovating old homes, spending weekends on his boat at Wilson Lake and earning his pilot’s license so he could fly his own plane.

On Oct. 28, 1951, he married Ardath Lorraine Gallagher in Stockton, Ill. Survivors include his wife, Ardath, of Larned; two sons, Rick and wife Gay Lynn of Lawrence and Kevin and wife Sharon of Westminster, Colo.; a daughter, Kyle, and fiancé Scotty McWalter of Aurora, Colo.; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother, Gerald.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel, Larned, with Pastor Dan Lundgrean presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Thursday at the mortuary. The casket will remain closed. Burial will be in the Larned Cemetery, Larned. Marjory Moore 1919 - 2008

Marjory Moore, 89, of Great Bend, died Nov. 1 at her home. She was born Sept. 16, 1919, at Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland, England, the daughter of Thomas William and Mary Ann Tate Telford. She married Leonard A. Moore on Aug. 7, 1945, at Downham Market, England. He survives. She was a resident of Great Bend since 1947, moving from Hays. She was a cashier at the Central Kansas Medical Center cafeteria for 17 years before her retirement. She was a three-year LACW British Royal Air Force veteran of World War II.

Mrs. Moore was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, a past vice president of the Episcopal Church Women, and a member of the VFW Auxiliary.

Marjory’s zest for life included her love for music, reading and especially sharing her sense of humor with family and friends. She always enjoyed having a bit of fun at someone else’s expense. Marjory will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Survivors include her husband, of the home; one son, David A. Moore and wife, Leticia, of Milliken, Colo.; two daughters, Sherry A. Winters and husband Gail of Greeley, Colo., and Tina M. Gemella A. Esfeld, 78, of Great Bend, died Nov. 2 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center, Great Bend. She was born April 9, 1930, at Beaver, the daughter of Phillip P. and Louise H. Schremmer Gerstenkorn. She married George F. Esfeld on Feb. 15, 1949, in Great Bend. He survives. She was a homemaker and also worked for USD 428 Food Service for 17 years, retiring in 1993. She was a longtime Great Bend resident, coming from Beaver.

Mrs. Esfeld was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose, Altar Society, Daughters of Isabella and VFW Post 3111 Auxiliary. Enjoying the many activities conducted at the Great Bend Senior Center, she also enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and most of all, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, of the home; three sons, Danny Esfeld and wife Sherie of Hoisington, and Mark Esfeld and wife Cathy, and Mike Esfeld and wife Kristi, all of Great Bend; three sisters, Joan Gorman of Salina, Alice Birch of Topeka and Patricia Lang of Lancaster, Calif.; 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, LeRoy Gerstenkorn and Gerald Gerstenkorn, and a sister, Helen McAllister.

HAYS — Alfreda Burgardt, 83, died Nov. 2 at Hays Medical Center, Hays. Born Oct. 20, 1925, in Liebenthal, she was the daughter of Martin M. and Elizabeth (Basgall) Herrman. She married Norman F. Burgardt on April 30, 1945, in Liebenthal. She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Burgardt was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church of Hays and the Christian Mothers of Holy Cross Catholic Church of Pfeifer.

Marion L. “Les” Burke 1926 - 2008

Marion L. “Les” Burke, 81, died Oct. 30 at Cherry Village Nursing Home in Great Bend. Born Dec. 24, 1926, in McGhee, Ark., he was the son of Edgar Lewis Burke Jr. and Birdie J. Kerr Burke. His first wife was Betty L. Douthitt. He later married Connie Castaneda Rocha on July 23, 1988, in Great Bend. She survives. A lifetime resident of Hoisington and Great Bend, he was a driller for D.R. Lauck and an oilfield bit salesman for Reed Tool.

Mr. Burke was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Navy. He was a member of the First Assembly of God Church and the Masonic Lodge, both in Great Bend.

Survivors include his wife, Connie Burke, of the home; two sons, Lester Burke and wife Sharon of Ellinwood and Gary Burke and wife Anna of Great Bend; three daughters, Dana Abrams, Belinda Peters and Karla Engler, all of Great Bend; a stepson, Gregory Rocha and wife Angie of Dodge City; a stepdaughter, Susan Vokland of Dodge City; 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph L. Burke, and a grandson.
