James Francis Link 1931 - 2009

PORTLAND, Ore. — Businessman James Francis Link, 77, passed away Jan. 30 at St. Vincent Hospital in Portland, Ore. He was born April 29, 1931, in Chase to Paul and Marie Link. One of nine siblings, he grew up on the family farm in rural Kansas and graduated from Chase High in 1950. After high school he joined the Air Force in 1951 and spent the next two years fighting in Korea, while sending his paycheck back home to his mom to help the family survive. Jim was a man who always put himself last to make sure his brothers and sisters had what they needed. He returned to Kansas in 1953 after an honorable discharge and went to work for Sinclair Oil as a roustabout. He was in charge of pumping the oil wells. In 1955 he met his future wife Rita Jo Thompson in Plainville and they were married in 1956. They had four children, the last born in 1965.

In 1966 he pulled up stakes and moved his entire family west in search of a better life. He went to work for Rita Jo’s uncle Al Toelkes who owned Evergreen Dist, a Blitz and Budweiser wholesaler. He drove a beer truck during the day and loaded them at night. He had a very hard time justifying the move and was so worried he had made the wrong decision. In 1970 he bought Standard Beer Distributing in Longview. He ran a successful business built on customer service and added to his company Quality Distributing, a local Coors Distrbutor, in 1996. In 2000 he sold his business after 30 years and retired. He was a man whose word was his bond and his handshake was so much more.

Jim was a farmer from the word go and his passion was John Deere tractors. He was a frugal man except when it came to his tractors. He spared nothing for his collection. He bought the family farm and homestead in Kansas known to all as Kate’s Farm named after his little sister and still has it farmed to this date. He is a partner in a 600-acre dude and cattle ranch named Long Hollow Ranch in Bend, Ore. He recently sold his ranch in Rainier, Ore., this past August, opting for a little less work and a lot more time with Rita.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Marie Link (Deutsch); a brother, Maurice Link; and a sister, Sue Akerman (Link). Surviving him at home is his wife of 53 years, Rita Jo Link; four children, Pam and Rich Anfinson of Longview, Wash., Brad and Rose Link and Phil and Joanie Link, all of Castle Rock, Wash., and Shelli Link-Whittaker of Boulder, Colo.; as well as seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild with another one on the way. He is also survived by his sisters, Marilyn Muth of Vernal, Utah, Joanne Taylor of Farmington, N. M., and Cary Schoenhofer and Kathleen Link, both of Lyons; and two brothers, John Link and Arnie Link, both of Chehalis, Wash.

Jim was a proud member of several local organizations and service clubs including the Elks, Eagles, Ducks Unlimited, Longview Legion, NRA, the John Deere Two Cylinder Club and was a member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. After retirement Jim focused his energy to his favorite charity, St. Vincent DePaul Food Bank of Longview. He enjoyed offering a place to store the extra food and the use of his forklifts to make the unloading process as easy as possible.

The celebration of life was Feb. 5 at St. Rose Catholic Church with Father Tim Ilgen officiating. A private inurnment concluded at Steele Chapel of Longview. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to Jim’s favorite charity, the St. Vincent DePaul Food Bank of Longview at 1222 Baltimore, Longview, WA 98632. Steele Chapel at Longview Memorial Park was in charge of arrangements.

Robert M. Benignus 1927 - 2009

HOISINGTON — Robert M. Benignus was born in Abilene on Feb. 15, 1927. He departed this life on Feb. 6. He was the oldest son of Albert and Jean (Miller) Benignus. Albert, a longtime businessman in Abilene, gave his son a strong sense of honesty and integrity. From his mother he learned a love of hunting and the out-of-doors.

After high school he enrolled in the Army Air Corps and served during World War II. Upon his return he met Priscilla A. Engel. They fell in love and were married for the last 56 years. From this union they raised three daughters, Beth, Nancy and Sara. Bob was also a doting grandfather to Beth’s children, Melissa and Benjamin.

Robert valued education, receiving a bachelor’s and a master’s degree from Kansas State University. Ben, as he was called by some, taught several years in Alton, followed by 34 years at Hoisington High School.

He was highly respected by his peers and students alike. As a former student commented on one of the multitude of cards received during Bob's 80th birthday card shower, “you were one who gave us the best and most lasting sort of esteem — the esteem that says you are worthy of being challenged to live up to high standards. Thousands of us are still in your debt.”

During the summers, while teaching, he began working as a crop adjuster for Farm Bureau Insurance. He developed trusted relationships with the insurance agents and farmers with whom he worked. Upon retirement from teaching he continued adjusting full time. He traveled throughout central and western Kansas for the company, enjoyed training new crop adjusters, and delighted in being outdoors.

He also earned his real estate license and worked in the industry in Barton County for a number of years.

He had a generous heart and any child appearing on his doorstep to sell cookies, tickets or candy was always rewarded with a big sale. Throughout the years, friends and neighbors were treated with home-grown vegetables and Halloween pumpkins from his garden.

Bob loved living in the area and spent many hours hunting in Cheyenne Bottoms with his wife and friends. He also enjoyed fishing, antiquing, furniture restoration and small building projects.

He will be remembered for his great wit, intelligence and humor. Many knew and enjoyed his ability to recall events and turn them into entertaining stories.

As a proud Hoisington resident for 53 years he served the community as a member of the Library Board and City Council.

For more than 50 years he was a member of the Masons. He was a Shriner, York Rite, and a member of the Hoisington Lodge No. 331.

He will be missed by his wife, Priscilla Benignus of the home; by his loving children, Elsbeth (Beth) Locke of Johannesburg, South Africa, Nancy Benignus of New York City, N.Y., and Sara Benignus of San Diego, Calif. Also missing Bob are his son-in-law Alan Locke; grandchildren, Melissa and Benjamin Locke, all of Johannesburg, South Africa; his brother, Eugene, and his wife, Martha Benignus of Topeka; nephews; a niece; cousins and numerous friends and former students.

Interment and a family service at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Enterprise, will be held at a future date.

In the words of another former student, Bob “made a career — and a glorious life ... in showing young people the joy of learning and the rewards of effort.” To celebrate his “glorious life” the family is establishing a memorial scholarship in Robert’s name for Hoisington High School graduates. Friends wishing to contribute can send memorial gifts in his name in care of the funeral home.
