Tressa Leatta McKinney Wallace 1912 - 2009

LINCOLN - Tressa Leatta McKinney Wallace, 97, a resident of Lincoln County for 97 years, died Sept. 17 at the Lincoln County Hospital of congestive heart failure. Tressa, the third of William and Docena Johansen McKinney's four children, was born March 2, 1912, in the Denmark community, eventually teaching school there until 1937. That autumn she was hired by the King School, three miles east of Barnard, and met a local farmer, Wilber Wallace. They were married on June 7, 1941, and made a home on the Barnard farm raising wheat, cattle and two sons. Tressa remained on the farm following Wilber's death in 1987, until moving to Lincoln in 2004.
Tressa lived "on the go." After graduating from Lincoln High School in 1929, she attended Fort Hays College during the summer to obtain a teacher's certification. She drove her family to the West Coast and to the Chicago World's Fair in the 1930s, taught and substituted in the area, faithfully attended First Baptist Church, Barnard, and served the community through the PTA, the Jolly Neighbors Club and regularly visited patients and residents at the hospital and nursing home.
Around 1960 she taught herself to type and for nearly 50 years composed an annual Christmas greeting in rhyming couplets that recounted the family's year. On most days her active schedule required that she master driving fast, leaving a signature billowing dust cloud to mark her coming and going.
Tressa loved visiting new places. She eagerly went anywhere that Wilber would take her and they made their first airplane trip to visit a new granddaughter in Seattle in January 1983. Over the next two decades she visited almost every part of the United States and numerous countries in Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Flying offered an opportunity to make new friends - with whoever was lucky enough to be seated beside her.
Tressa is survived by two sons, Al Joe of Barnard and Robert and wife Mary Margaret of Reston, Va.; three grandchildren, Carrie Wallace, Sarah Foster and husband Matt of Ashville, Ky., and David Wallace and wife Erin, their children, Jonathan, Hazel and Charles of Sugarland, Texas, and more than 50 "favorite" nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Lewis McKinney, two sisters, Sarah McKinney and Hazel Flaherty, and nephews Bill McKinney and Ivan McKinney. Tressa leaves a legacy of nearly 100 years of kindness and hospitality rooted in committed Christian faith.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church in Barnard with burial following at the Milo Cemetery. The family will receive visitors at the Hall Chapel in Lincoln from 5 to 7 p.m. today. Visitation is from 1 to 7 p.m. at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Barnard Lions Club Scholarship Fund, the Lincoln County Hospital Foundation or a ministry of the donor's choice.
