Sidney A. Rusco 1918 - 2008
Sidney A. Rusco, 90, died Sept. 26. Born April 13, 1918, in Great Bend, he was the son of John David and Ollie Ross Lucas Rusco. He married Dolores V. Fisher on Aug. 1, 1940, in Great Bend. A lifetime resident of Great Bend, he was a farmer most of his life, retiring when he was 80. He also had a plumbing, heating and air-conditioning business for more than 25 years.
Mr. Rusco served in the Air Force during World War II. He was an airplane mechanic working on B-17s, B-29s and AT-6s. He received several medals while serving in the Air Force.
Mr. Rusco was a member of the First Assembly of God Church where he was a Sunday School Superintendent for 38 years and a deacon. He loved mission work.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; a son, Ronald Rusco of Atlanta, Ga.; a daughter, Carolee McCullough and husband Robert of Sacramento, Calif.; three grandchildren, April Denning of Tampa, Fla., Javin Rusco of Lafayette, Ind., and Jennifer Pennepacker of Temple, Ga.; and three great-grandchildren, Kai Newell-Denning, Jasper Pennepacker and Dace Rusco. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Lloyd, Alfred, Clarence and Orville Rusco; and an infant sister.
Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at the First Assembly of God Church in Great Bend with Pastor Dwight D. Dozier officiating. Burial will be at the Great Bend Cemetery with military honors provided by the United States Air Force. Friends may visit from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today with the family receiving friends from 7 to 8 p.m., at Bryant Funeral Home. Edward L. Juno 1917 - 2008
OTIS — Edward L. Juno, 91, died Sept. 27 at Rush County Memorial Hospital in La Crosse. Born Jan. 16, 1917, in rural Timken, he was the son of Frank A. and Anna Pechanec Juno. He married Evelyn Frances Demel on May 6, 1942, in Odin. A lifetime resident of the Otis area, he was a farmer.
Mr. Juno was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Catholic Workmen and the Otis Senior Citizens. He was also a former director of the Timken Co-op and a former board member of the Rush County Memorial Hospital.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; two sons, Bernard Juno and wife Beverly of Bison, and Edward F. Juno and wife Karen of Sinclair, Wyo.; two daughters, Rita Dunlap and husband Gary of Salina, and Elvita Landau and husband Vince of Brookings, S.D.; 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and four stepgreat-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Frank and James Juno, and one sister, Anna Williams, and by an infant grand-daughter, Constance Dunlap.
Vigil service with Knights of Columbus Rosary will be at 7 p.m. today at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, Hoisington. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Ann Catholic Church in Olmitz with Father Ultan Murphy officiating. Burial will be at St. Ann Cemetery in Olmitz. Karen Sue Henderson 1958 - 2008
HAYS — Karen Sue Henderson, 50, died Sept. 27 at Hays Medical Center. She was born May 21, 1958, in Savannah, Ga., the daughter of Billie Joe and Barbara Jean (Foley) Henderson. She was baptized into the Southern Baptist faith and was a homemaker.
Survivors include three sons, Michael O. Linenberger of Great Bend, Nathan D. Donner of Russell and CJ Donner of Houston, Texas; two daughters, Amie J. Linenberger of Great Bend and Maggie M. Delzeit of Hoisington; two brothers, Michael O. Henderson and Bill J. Henderson, both of Great Bend; a sister, Patti L. Caruthers of San Antonio, Texas; a significant other, Evan Kenneth Jones III of Hays, and five grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine St. Visitation, with the family receiving friends, will be from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the mortuary. Memorials are suggested to the Karen Sue Henderson Memorial Fund, in care of the funeral home.

Glendal Lee “Pete” Musgrove 1926 - 2008
MEDICINE LODGE — Glendal Lee “Pete” Musgrove, 81, died Sept. 27 at Pratt Regional Medical Center. He was born Sept. 30, 1926, in Bramen, Okla., the son of Glen and Viola (Lackey) Musgrove. He married Billie J. Smith in San Juan, Texas, on Nov. 2, 1945. A longtime resident of Medicine Lodge, he retired after working for more than 40 years in the oilfield. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II in the 158th Infantry Division.
Mr. Musgrove was a member of the First Christian Church in Medicine Lodge and of the American Legion.
Survivors, include his wife, of the home; a daughter, Marcia Rowley, and her husband, John, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; a brother, Bill Musgrove, of Medicine Lodge; three sisters, Janie Revis of Wamego, Betty Beeby of Marshall, Okla., and Bonnie Allen of Enid, Okla.; and two grandchildren, Chelsea and Haley. He was preceded in death by three brothers, J.C., Kenneth “Fudd” and Jimmy Musgrove.
Funeral service was at 4 p.m. Monday at First Christian Church, Medicine Lodge, with Pastor Tom Walters presiding. Burial was in Highland Cemetery, Medicine Lodge. Christine Elizabeth Carroll Jezek 1913 - 2008
HOLYROOD — Christine Elizabeth Carroll Jezek, 95, died Sept. 24 at Villa St. Francis, Olathe. She was born March 31, 1913, in Norris City, Ill., and moved to Holyrood in 1937 following her marriage to the late Joseph Jezek.
She is survived by daughters Carol and Barbara; grandchildren Todd and David Heil, and Kate Withrow; great-grandchildren Michaela and Kerianne, Madison, Jake, and Emma Heil; and sister Pauline Krause.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ Cemetery in Holyrood.

Donald D. Tajchman 1947 - 2008
Donald D. Tajchman, 61, of Great Bend, died Sept. 26 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. He was born July 8, 1947, at Hillsboro, the son of Peter and Adeline Roh Tajchman. He married Pauline Demel on Oct. 14, 1972, at Great Bend. A resident of Great Bend since 1973, coming from Marion County, he was employed by Glass King Manufacturing and worked for the Alfalfa Pellet Mill for 25 years.
Mr. Tajchman was a member of the Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include his wife of the home; three brothers, Clarence Tajchman of Abilene, Texas, Robert Tajchman of Firestone, Colo., and Patrick Tajchman of Marion; and one sister, Patricia White of Fruitland Park, Fla. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Leonard Tajchman and Francis Tajchman and one sister, Margaret Rueschhoff.
A Vigil Service with Knights of Columbus Rosary will take place at 7 p.m. on Monday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend, with Father Floyd McKinney officiating. Interment will be at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Pilsen Cemetery in Pilsen. Visitation is from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. William F. “Bill” Aubel 1925 - 2008
HAYS — William F. “Bill” Aubel, 83, died Sept. 26, at the Hays Good Samaritan Center. He was born July 11, 1925, in Manhattan, the son of Cliff E. and Dora (Otto) Aubel. He married Betty J. Hinkhouse in 1949 and later married Joanna Typer on March 29, 1986, in Hays. He was a former life insurance salesman, developer of Aubel Asphalt Company, a land developer, owner of Standish Ford car dealership in Hays, owner of Hays Travel Agency and owner of A & A Coors in Hays.
Mr. Aubel was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during World War II. He was a member of Rotary Club, the Lions Club, Tiger Club, a longtime board member at Hays Medical Center, founder of the Hays Medical Center Foundation and past president of the Hays Chamber of Commerce.
Survivors include his wife of the home; son, Jim Aubel, of Hays; stepson, Joel Mollohan of Hays; stepdaughter, Sue Ross of Edmond, Okla.; a sister, Joanne Claus; four granddaughters; two step-granddaughters; and a great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Aubel.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home. A private family burial will be in the Mt. Allen Cemetery. Robert Doyle Foster
LARNED — Robert Doyle Foster, 61, died Sept. 24 at his home in Larned. He was born March 9, 1947, at Great Bend, the son of Doyle Copper and Maxine Brannan Foster. A lifetime resident of Pawnee County, he was a juvenile correctional officer at the Larned Juvenile Correctional Facility, Larned. He was a huge KSU fan, loved golfing, enjoyed working on the farm and loved his family very dearly. The highlight of his life were his grandchildren, Malachi Foster and Phoebe Davis. This year was one of the best years of his life. During this year, Pheobe turned 2, Malachi turned 1, there is another grandchild on the way and for once things went well at harvest. His mother was one of his closest friends and his little dog Max was his constant companion.
Survivors include his mother, Maxine, Larned; a son, David Robert Foster and his wife Lynette; a daughter, Jami Foster Davis, and her husband Travis, all of Denver, Colo.; a sister, Kathleen Marie Foster, Hutchinson; three grandchildren, Phoebe Marie Davis, Malachi David Foster and a future baby, Davis. He was preceded in death by his father Doyle C. Foster.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church, Larned, with the Rev. Bill Fitzgerrel presiding. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel, Larned. Inurnment will be at a later date.

Dixie Winona Haberman 1920 - 2008
STAFFORD — Dixie Winona Haberman, 88, died Sept. 23 at Leisure Homestead in Stafford. She was born Feb. 21, 1920, at Bentonville, Ark., the daughter of James and Lucille Curt Morrison. She married Jerome Frank Haberman on Jan. 12, 1960, in Great Bend. He died on April 11, 2004. A resident of Stafford, coming from Great Bend, Pawnee Rock and Liberal, she was a homemaker.
Mrs. Haberman was a member of the Church of Christ in Stafford.
Survivors include a son, Darin Haberman and wife Cheri, of Great Bend; two sisters, Dorothy Thornton of Great Bend and Jeannine Martin of Stafford; three grandchildren, Ashley Ellis and husband Tony, Matthew Haberman and Ryan Haberman; four great-grandchildren, Marcus Ellis, Hallie Ellis, Elijah Ellis and Isaac Ellis. She was preceded in death by an infant son, Jerry Curt Haberman; brothers, Leslie Morrison, Donovan Morrison, Ted Morrison and Wallace Morrison; and an infant sister, Willa June Morrison.
Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. on Friday at Great Bend Cemetery, with Richard Foster officiating. Interment will be in the cemetery. Nina Marie Sceals Steuri 1917 - 2008
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Nina Marie Sceals Steuri, 91, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on July 20. Nina was born at home in Hudson, in Stafford County, Feb. 12, 1917, to Florence Lucinda Merritt Sceals and Denver Lester Sceals. She married the love of her life, Eldon Wayne Steuri, on Nov. 21, 1937. He preceded her in death on Feb. 2, 1984. Their union was blessed by the birth of a son, John Eldon, and a daughter, Suzanne.
A graveside inurnment service will be conducted by the Rev. Don Schroeder of Salina, visiting pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Great Bend, at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at the Great Bend Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the First Presbyterian Church parlor, 2400 Washington, Great Bend, at noon, following church services, on Sunday.

Gerald Peter Berscheidt 1924 - 2008
TACOMA, Wash. — Gerald Peter Berscheidt, born Aug. 1, 1924, in Ellinwood, passed away Sept. 23 in Auburn, Wash. He grew up in Kansas, then served in the Army during World War II in both Europe and Africa and was stationed in Fort Lewis, Wash. After his military service, he lived in Orting, Wash., then Tacoma, Wash., where he owned Jerry’s Tavern in South Tacoma, and then in Algona for 11 years. He began his career as a field auditor with the State of Washington in 1973 and retired after nearly 30 years to Yakima because of his love of fishing. He returned to Tacoma six years ago.
Mr. Berscheidt has been a member of the Eagles, the VFW and the American Legion, and St. Patrick Catholic Church.
Survivors include his children: Jackie (Steve) Poyorena, Mary Berscheidt and Dennis and Henry Berscheidt, all of the Tacoma area; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Jerry was preceded in death by his wife Norma of 59 years, parents, Henry and Mary Berscheidt, one brother and two sisters.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick Catholic Church, and Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Friday at Gaffney Funeral Home Chapel, Tacoma. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery. The family suggests memorials be made to Franciscan Hospice of Tacoma.

Melissa Dawn Shuey 1984 - 2008
HOISINGTON — Melissa Dawn Shuey, 24, died Sept. 18 at Via Christi St. Francis Regional Medical Center in Wichita, as the result of an automobile accident. Born July 23, 1984, in Hoisington, she was the daughter of Joseph C. and Cassandra Jo Schmidt Shuey. A lifetime resident of Barton County, she was a CNA and CMA. She was a very caring, loving mother, daughter and friend.
Survivors include her father, Joseph Shuey, and step-mother, Darla, of Great Bend; her mother, Cassandra Jo Shuey and Jeff Risher of Lamar, Mo.; common-law husband, William Cody Watson, of the home; daughter, Molly Jo Watson, of the home; adopted brother, Roger King of Russell; and paternal grandparents, Roger and Marion Shuey. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Dave and Pat Schmidt.

William N. “Bill” Doherty, 83, of Great Bend, died Sept. 21 at Ellinwood District Hospital, Ellinwood. He was born June 17, 1925, in rural Ellinwood, the son of William H. and Mayme M. Dressen Doherty. He married Benita Fern Baxter on May 15, 1945, at Great Bend. She died July 10, 2003. He was a clerk for the U.S. Postal Service and a lifetime resident of Great Bend. He was a World War II veteran, serving with the U.S. Navy.
Mr. Doherty was a member of the Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and a life member of the American Legion Argonne Post 180, both of Great Bend.
Survivors include three daughters, Marcia K. Sieker and husband Jerry of Ellinwood, Julie A. Doherty of Great Bend and Lisa M. Doherty of Springfield, Mo.; and five grandchildren, Kevin Sieker, Kimberly Klepper and husband Dallas, Kyle Sieker, Kelci Sieker and Alex Hertel. He was preceded in death by a brother, Leo Doherty, and two sisters, Bernadine Alberts and Ruth Pullin.

Mary L. Mullenix 1917 - 2008
BUSHTON — Mary L. Mullenix, 91, died Sept. 19 at her Bushton home. She was born March 21, 1917, at Hutchinson, the daughter of Walter and Virginia (Lauderdale) Alexander. She married Raymond T. Mullenix on March 7, 1937, at Hutchinson. He preceded her in death on Oct. 18, 2002. She was a homemaker and a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend to many. She was a longtime Bushton resident, coming from Lyons. She was a 1935 graduate of Lyons High School.
Mrs. Mullenix was a member of the First United Methodist Church, UMW Circle and taught nursery and Sunday school for many years.
Survivors include five daughters, Shirley Jeter, and her husband Earl, of Kingfisher, Okla., Karen Sunderland and her husband Guy of Great Bend, Trudy Magee of Bloomington, Ill., Nora Anderson and her husband Lyle of Bloomington, Ind., and Deanna Harris and her husband Ed of Overland Park; nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia McCandless, and a granddaughter, Mandi Alexander.

M. Gladys Glaze 1916 - 2008
LARNED — M. Gladys Glaze, 92, died Sept. 19 at Central Kansas Medical Center, St. Rose Campus in Great Bend. She was born June 18, 1916, at Bazine, the daughter of B.C. and Lottie Miller Brown. On Dec. 31, 1938, she married Byron Glaze at Hutchinson. He died Feb. 16, 1993. She was a medical aide at the Larned State Hospital Youth Program, Larned.
Mrs. Glaze was a member of the First United Methodist Church and a member of the Literature Arts and Music Group, all in Larned.
Survivors include two sons, Eldon Glaze of Larned and Errol Glaze of Laredo, Texas; one daughter, Gwen Hipp of Marrian Woods, Mo.; six grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Herschel, Harry and Maurice, and two sisters, Lieta Berry and Maurine Coen.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel in Larned, with the Rev. Jack Singer presiding. Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday at the mortuary. Burial will be in the Larned City Cemetery in Larned. Dale W. Jones 1928 - 2008
Dale W. Jones, 80, Great Bend, died Sept. 19 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center, Great Bend. He was born Sept. 13, 1928, at Rozel, the son of Estal and Ruby Ross Jones. He married Margareta Anna Appel April 26, 1958 in Kahl, Germany. She died Dec. 24, 1990. He later married Opal Miller on April 28, 1994, in Great Bend. She survives. He graduated from Burdett High School. Entering the service in 1951, Dale began a career in the United States Army, which would take him to Germany, Korea, Vietnam and Okinawa, as well as numerous stateside assignments. He served as a wrecker operator, mechanic, maintenance supervisor and Logistics inspection team leader, culminating his progression as a command sergeant major before retiring in 1978. He began his new civilian life working for the Schlage Lock Company in Colorado, before moving to Germany with his family, working at the Hanau Area Club System, the Army Property Disposal Office, Peco Enterprises and ARS Data Collection.
Dale attended First United Methodist Church and was a member of VFW Post No. 3111, American Legion Post No. 180, Eagles Lodge No. 646 and the Disabled American Veterans, all in Great Bend.
Survivors include his wife, Opal Jones, of the home; two sons, Armand H. Jones and wife Angelika, Kahl, Germany, and William L. Jones and wife Tammy, Great Bend; a daughter, Astrid M. Kammerlander and husband Gerold, Hangen-Weisheim, Germany; two stepdaughters, Angela Miller of Lawrence and Donna Wharton and husband Nelson of Great Bend; a brother, Clarence E. Jones of Larned; six grandchildren, two stepgrandsons, four great-grandchildren and four stepgreat-grandsons.
Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Bryant Funeral Home, Great Bend, with the Rev. Gary Brooks officiating. Interment will be at the Great Bend Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Donations to memorial funds for VFW Post 3111 or for First United Methodist Church may be made in care of the funeral home. Freda M. Hitz 1920 - 2008
LYONS — Freda M. Hitz, 88, died Sept. 16 at Hospital District No. 1 in Lyons. Born Aug. 22, 1920, in Toronto, Kan., she was the daughter of A.P. and Ora Elsie Martin Wootton. She married Albert Roof on Sept. 13, 1938, in Fredonia. He preceded her in death. She married Howard Hitz on Jan. 29, 1972, in Great Bend. He died in 1982. A resident of Lyons since 1982, coming from Great Bend, she was a dietary cook for Central Kansas Medical Center before retirement.
Mrs. Hitz was of the Christian faith.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Stone and husband Jay of Lyons; a sister, Lola Drake of Pueblo, Colo.; four grandchildren, Bill Anthony of Lyons, Justin Anthony of McPherson, Tyler Stone of Lawrence and Robert Alvarado of Walcott, Iowa; three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Elmer Wootton, Everett Wootton and Don Wootton, and four sisters, Elsie Smith, Pearl Felkins, Opal Faulk and Doris Puckett.
Funeral service will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend with the Rev. William F. Johnson officiating. Interment will be at the Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may visit from 1 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to service time on Saturday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society in care of the funeral home. Susan Jolene Taylor 1964 - 2008
FRESNO, Calif. — Susan Jolene Taylor, 44, died Sept. 1 at Community Regional Hospital in Fresno. She was born June 2, 1964, at Meade, to Jerry and Julia Dalton Taylor. She married Wayne Schwartz on Sept. 12, 2006, in Las Vegas. She was a homemaker. A former Great Bend resident, she lived in Fresno for 20 years.
Survivors include her husband, of the home; two sons, James Ray Taylor of the home and Jaime Lee Hearn, also of California; her father, Jerry Taylor, of Hobart, Okla., and mother, Julia Kossian of Larned; one brother, Brian Taylor of Hobart, Okla.; two sisters, Shannon Wittig of Great Bend and Shari Stark of Olmitz.
Following a memorial service in Fresno, funeral was Sept. 11 at Wright Funeral Directors’ mortuary in Shamrock, Texas, with the Rev. Paul Taylor of Binger, Okla., officiating. Burial was to be in the Shamrock Cemetery. Wright Funeral Directors of Shamrock, Texas, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials are suggested to The United Way of Barton County.

PAWNEE ROCK — John W. Howerton, 94, of Pawnee Rock, died Sept. 10 at Hays Medical Center, Hays. He was born Feb. 8, 1914, at Creal Springs, Ill., the son of Elijah and Mayme Creal Howerton. He married Annie Wilson, who preceded him in death. He later married Jessie A. Lone on March 5, 1975, at Pawnee Rock. She died Nov. 2, 2005. He was a self-employed wheat custom cutter. He was a Pawnee Rock resident since 1943, coming from Colorado.
Mr. Howerton was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include two sons, Ralph Howerton of Hays and Jack Howerton of Lyons; two stepsons, Bob Manka and Philip Manka, both of Pawnee Rock; two stepdaughters, Gloria Wondra of Newton and Kay Manka of Colorado; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Wesley Howerton, and a brother, Roy Howerton.
A graveside service was at 10 a.m. Monday in the Pawnee Rock Cemetery, with the Rev. John Grummon officiant. Memorial donations may be made to the charity or organization of the donor’s choice, in care of the funeral home.

WICHITA — Wesley Summers, 72, died Sept. 13. A private family service was scheduled. He was born Feb. 3, 1936, in Yates Center. He was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy.
Survivors include a son, Darrel Summers; daughters, Renee Summers, Sandra Palmer and Catherine Ludlow; and five grandchildren.
Mr. Summers formerly lived in the Great Bend area.

Orville O. “Butch” Spray Jr. 1939 - 2008
Orville O. “Butch” Spray Jr., 69, of Great Bend, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Sept. 14, in Houston, Texas, following a courageously fought battle with cancer.
Butch was born on Aug. 27, 1939, at Halstead, the son of Orville O. “Punk” and Stella Marie Wallace Spray, both of whom preceded him in death.
He married Doris Mounkes, the light of his life, on May 24, 1959, at Emporia.
Butch leaves behind a family that dearly loves him: His wife, a daughter Tammy Holt and husband Bob; and two sons, Kip and his wife Kelly and Chris and his wife Julie. He also leaves behind nine grandchildren who adored their Grandpa: Brett, Brad and Allan Holt, Kameron, Kaitlee and Kylee Spray, and Stefan, Maddox and Mersadie Spray.
He was a resident of Great Bend since 1973, coming from Hutchinson.
Butch enjoyed most, those times he could get away with his family, and in particular the many trips to Hawaii, where he spent time alone with his wife, children and grandchildren sharing his philosophy, scuba diving, snorkeling or simply watching the most beautiful sunset. He will be remembered as a man who considered his family and friends as God’s greatest blessing.
Butch graduated from K-State in 1961, earning himself a Civil Engineering degree. He worked for List & Clark in Sand Springs, Okla., as a superintendent before moving his wife, daughter and son back to Kansas where he took a job with J.H. Shears & Sons. In 1973 he started Venture Corporation in Larned, relocating it to Great Bend in 1976. Through his passion for the work he grew Venture Corporation into the company it is today.
Butch was president of the Kansas Contractors Association in 1998. He served on the KCA Board of Directors for 12 years and as a trustee on the Construction Industry of Kansas Health & Welfare Trust Fund. He was a member of the KCA Political Action Committee 165 Club and the Associated General Contractors of America Political Action Committee 535 Club. He served as the Kansas legislative coordinator of the AGC PAC and was a member and chair of numerous KCA committees. Butch served as president of the Kansas Asphalt Paving Association in 1988, 1989, 1990 and 1991, was appointed by Gov. Bill Graves in 1998 to serve on the Governor’s T-2000 Transportation Task Force and was a member of the Kansas Calvary. He served on the National Asphalt Paving Association Legislative Committee for 12 years, from 1997 through 2008. He was also a member of the Board of the Kansas Chamber of Commerce. Butch was a long-standing member of the Masonic Lodge and Shriner’s organizations, and attended Trinity Lutheran Church of Great Bend.
Butch, you will be dearly missed by your family, friends and associates.
Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Great Bend with the Rev. James A. Strasen officiating. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Robert (Bob) Stroble 1932 - 2008
NEWTON — Following a courageous battle with cancer and Alzheimer’s, Robert (Bob) Stroble went on to be with the Lord on Sept. 13 at the age of 76. Bob was born on July 7, 1932, in Great Bend to Charles and Regina Stroble.
Western Kansas is where he grew to love hunting and fishing. He leaves many friends with whom he has spent wonderful times hunting and chasing coyotes. In 1965 Bob and Valetta moved to Newton and raised their five children.
Bob leaves the love of his life after 54 years of marriage. Bob married Valetta Penka in Larned in 1954 and quickly started a large family. Bob was a loving husband and father. He has five children, Jan Plummer of Newton, John Stroble of Edmond, Okla., Bob Stroble of Manhattan, Wade Stroble of Lawrence and Juline Taylor of Joplin, Mo. He also has 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Bob also leaves two brothers, Jerry Knight of Dallas, Texas, and Mike Strobe of Ellinwood. He also leaves his sister, Roberta Berry, of Estes Park, Colo.
Bob worked for Dillon’s Supermarket for 36 years in various locations but the majority of that time was in Newton. He was a meat market manager at Dillon’s South and was responsible for training many future managers. He also catered for Dillon’s for many years and was a master behind a grill. He cooked the best steaks and mountain oysters anywhere.
Bob will always be remembered for his feisty approach to life and his wonderful smile. He loved people and never knew a stranger. Bob had the ability to make every person he came in contact with feel special. His kind ways and hearty greetings always brought a smile to those around him.
Rosary Service will be held at 7 p.m. today at Petersen Family Funeral Home, Newton. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Newton. Burial services will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery.

Kenneth Carl Standlee 1929 - 2008
ELLINWOOD — Kenneth Carl Standlee, 79, died Sept. 11 at Ellinwood District Hospital. He was born Feb. 4, 1929, at Winfield, to Dave and Clara Brisco Standlee. On June 29, 1946, he married his loving wife Helen Mae Berryhill at Hays. He was baptized at the Baptist Church in Plainville in 1963.
Ken pumped wells and worked for Republic National Gas. He started Ken’s Roustabout Service around 1960 at Plainville. In 1964, he moved to Ellinwood, where he was production superintendent for E.K. Edmiston of Great Bend. He started 4/S Tank Truck Service of Ellinwood, which he ran from 1982-1997. He was in the oilfield all of his life.
Ken was much loved and will be greatly missed.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; two sons, Jerry Standlee and wife Mary, and Rick Standlee and Jacci, all of Ellinwood; one sister, Darlene Honomichl, Ellinwood; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a son, Curtis Standlee; a grandson, Kenneth M. Standlee; and a brother, R.D. Standlee.

Matt Tammen, 27, of Great Bend, died Sept. 12 in rural Great Bend. He was born April 1, 1981, at Great Bend, to David Lee and Debra Renee Hejny Tammen. A lifetime resident of Great Bend, he graduated from Great Bend High School and worked on the family farm.
Survivors include his parents, of Great Bend; significant other, Julie Hood, Great Bend; two daughters, Hailey and Riley Tammen, Great Bend; one brother, Michael Lee Tammen, Great Bend; one sister, Melissa Tammen, Albert; and a grandfather, Orval Hejny, Great Bend. He was preceded in death by grandparents Charles Lee and Jaunise Tammen, and Betty Hejny.

Floyd A. Betterton 1915 - 2008
Floyd A. Betterton, 92, died Sept. 8 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation. Born Sept. 20, 1915, in Nowata, Okla., he was the son of Martin Luther and Iva Mae Simmons Betterton. He married Dolores Lannon on Dec. 17, 1942, at Pawhuska, Okla. She died March 20, 2008. A resident of Great Bend since 1965, he was a pumper for Phillips Petroleum.
Mr. Betterton was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 646.
Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Dianne Betterton of Wichita, and three grandchildren, Richard Betterton, Angela Hunnicutt and Michael Betterton.

Evelyn Leonilla (Komarek) Duke 1938 - 2008
BUCKEYE, Ariz. — Evelyn L. (Komarek) Duke passed away Sept. 4 at her home in Buckeye, Ariz., after a long battle with cancer. She was born July 10, 1938, at Great Bend, the daughter of G.E. (Shorty) and Marie (Oberle) Komarek. Evelyn attended Ellinwood Schools, graduating as valedictorian from Ellinwood Rural High School in 1956. She graduated from the University of Kansas with a bachelor’s degree and attended Georgetown University Law School. While attending Georgetown, she worked for Kansas Sen. Bob Dole. She married Glen J. Duke and they eventually settled in Buckeye, Ariz., where they raised their family. She worked for the Buckeye Elementary School for almost 20 years.
She is survived by two daughters, Celestena Duke of Tucson, Ariz., and Corie Courtney and husband Brian of Goodyear, Ariz.; two sons, Gerald Duke and wife Michelle of Washington, and Matthew Duke and wife Tara of Litchfield Park, Ariz., along with seven grandchildren.
Also surviving are five brothers, Jerry Komarek and wife Judy, Tom Komarek and wife Jan and Henry Komarek and wife Debbie, all of Ellinwood, Jim Komarek and wife Carol of Enid, Okla., and Steve Komarek of Lincolnville; two sisters, Mary and husband Jerry Standlee of Ellinwood and Ruth Ann Komarek of Alexandria, Va., along with numerous nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glen J. Duke, and her parents.
A celebration of her life will be held at Bale's Elementary School Cafeteria in Buckeye at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 21. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Evelyn Duke Memorial Fund at Chase Bank of Buckeye, 402 East Monroe St., Buckeye, AZ 85326 to help students in need of educational materials.

Esther May (Bender) Fleischmann 1920 - 2008
GREELEY, Colo. — Esther May (Bender) Fleischmann, 88, of Greeley, a former Russell resident, passed away peacefully at 8:30 p.m. on Sept. 8, at the Centennial Healthcare Center in Greeley. Esther was born May 5, 1920, on the Bender family farm in rural Russell County, the daughter of August and Bertha (Bender) Bender. She spent her childhood and early adult life in the Russell County area and attended country schools. Later she married Roland Fleischmann in June of 1956 at the Athol Lutheran Church in Athol. Together Esther and Roland raised three children, Walt, Mike and Cordelia.
Even though she and Roland did not remain together, Esther always provided the love and care her children needed. She was a loving and caring mother and homemaker who was not known to complain at life’s trials and always had a positive outlook on life. She enjoyed gardening, raising beautiful roses and dancing. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will always be remembered by her family as a caring mother and hard worker with a patient demeanor and caring personality.
Mrs. Fleischmann was a former member of the Bender Hill Lutheran Church.
Survivors include three children, sons Walt Fleischmann of Great Bend and Mike Fleischmann of Fort Collins, Colo.; a daughter, Cordelia Fleischmann of Greeley, Colo.; a sister, Tillie (Bender) Prather of Guymon, Okla.; eight grandchildren, Theresa, Gloria, Kevin, Barry, Daniel, Kevin, Brian and Jennifer; and three great-grandchildren, Tyrel, Nicole and Larissa. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Louie, Oscar, Marvin and Milton, and sisters Esther, Alma, Pauline and Lena.
A graveside service to celebrate Esther’s life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Bender Hill Cemetery, Russell. Memorials may be given to your favorite charity in honor of Esther Fleischmann. Marie E. Beebe 1940 - 2008
Marie E. Beebe, 68, of Great Bend, died Sept. 8 at Kansas Medical Center in Andover. Born July 29, 1940, in Belize City, Belize, she was the daughter of Hugh Weir and Rosalie (Menzies) Bishop. She married David E. Beebe of St. Charles, Mo., on May 19, 1961, in Albuquerque, N.M. Most recently they have lived in St. Charles, Mo., Baton Rouge, La., and San Antonio, Texas. They have been Great Bend residents for the last four years.
Marie and David lived in Europe and the Far East and many points in between during David’s military career. Marie had many occupations through the years, including being a hair stylist, secretary, teaching English to Japanese professionals, cake decorator, elementary school teacher and for the last nine years she was the caregiver for four of her grandchildren on a daily basis. Marie enjoyed traveling and being with her family and friends. She earned a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Texas at the age of 56.
Marie was a member of the Prince of Peace Parish and Altar Society.
Survivors include her husband, David, of the home; mother, Rosalie Bishop of Miami, Fla.; a daughter, Dr. Marjorie M. Beebe of Great Bend; a son, Robert Beebe and wife Vanessa of Flint, Texas; six grandchildren, Hannah, Abby, Eve and Aaron Schifman, all of Great Bend, and Lauren and Katherine Beebe of San Antonio, Texas; two stepgrandsons, Matthew and Jacob of San Antonio, Texas; 11 brothers and four sisters. She was preceded in death by her father and a son-in-law Bradley Schifman.
Altar Society Rosary was at 4 p.m. Tuesday followed by a Vigil Service at 7 p.m., at Bryant Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Patrick Catholic Church with Father Floyd McKinney officiating. There will be a viewing at Baue Funeral Home, 3950 West Clay in St. Charles, Mo., at 1 p.m. on Friday. The funeral service will be at 2:30 p.m. in the Baue Chapel. Burial will immediately follow. Dennis R. Axman 1951 - 2008
Dennis R. Axman, 57, of Great Bend, died Sept. 8 at Promise Regional Medical Center, Hutchinson. He was born March 15, 1951, at Great Bend, the son of Benedict F. and Viola M. Demel Axman. He married Vicki K. Detmer on April 20, 1974, at Great Bend. She survives. He was a UPS Service provider. He was a lifetime resident of Olmitz and Great Bend.
Mr. Axman was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick, Great Bend, and a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus of Olmitz.
He enjoyed working on the family farm and was a classic-car enthusiast.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, of the home, include two daughters, Karisa M. Haberman and husband Jason J. of Great Bend, and Lora D. Hess and husband Scott B. of Hays; three brothers, Edward Axman of Wichita, Ronald Axman of Houston, Texas, and Gary Axman of Otis; three sisters, Mary Ann Mazouch of Great Bend, Jolene Mainzer of Wichita and Virginia Debes of Odin; and four grandchildren, Kori Haberman, Gavin Haberman, Logan Hess and Lucas Hess. His parents preceded him in death.
A vigil service with Knights of Columbus Rosary will be at 7 p.m. today at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Great Bend. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the church, with Father Reginald A. Urban officiant. Interment will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Ann’s Cemetery, Olmitz. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at Bryant Funeral Home, Great Bend, and from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the church. Fred Aden 1919 - 2008
Fred Aden, 89, of Great Bend, died Sept. 9 at the Pocahontas Manor Care Center, Pocahontas, Iowa. Born Aug. 29, 1919, at Palmer, Iowa, he was the son of Edd Henry and Kate Seehusen Aden. He married Margaret Virginia Funk on Feb. 18, 1945, at Great Bend. She died Dec. 18, 2005. He was the owner/operator of Aden Furniture and later managed Wells Furniture. He was a veteran of World War II and a resident of Great Bend since 1943, living recently in Pocahontas, Iowa, since March 2007.
Mr. Aden was a member of First United Methodist Church, American Legion Argonne Post 180, the Elks Lodge and Rotary, all of Great Bend.
Survivors include two sisters, Edna Wiemers and husband Paul of Manteca, Calif., and Dorothy Siefken and husband Larry of Palmer, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his wife, a son, Frederick Alan Aden, two brothers, Herman Aden and Raymond Aden, and a sister, Kathryn Aden.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Bryant Funeral Home, Great Bend, with the Rev. William F. Johnson officiating. Interment will be at the Great Bend Cemetery, with military rites conducted by a Fort Riley Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Bryant Funeral Home. Inez Strutt Lorson 1926 - 2008
Inez Strutt Lorson, 82, died Sept. 8 at her residence in Great Bend. She was born March 18, 1926, at Natoma, the daughter of John Strutt and Esther Worden Strutt. A resident of Great Bend 28 years, coming from Lebanon and Fresno, Calif., she was a teacher.
She was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick’s and Altar Society.
Survivors include two sons, Duke Lorson and Doug Lorson, both of Great Bend; two daughters, Virginia McCartney of Claflin and Pamela Lorson Coleman of Great Bend; three grandchildren, Jill McCartney, Grant Coleman and Brooke Coleman; and a brother, Ronald Strutt of Woodston. She was preceded in death by a brother, Johnny Strutt.
Altar Society Rosary will take place at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, with a vigil service at 7 p.m., all at Bryant Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend, with Father Floyd McKinney officiating. Cecelia T. Schneweis 1927 - 2008
ODIN — Cecelia T. Schneweis, 80, died Sept. 6 at Hays Medical Center. She was born Oct. 23, 1927, in Redwing, the daughter of Joe K. and Agnes (Debes) Wondra. She married Lawrence L. Schneweis on May 29, 1956, in Odin. He died Feb. 17, 1976. A lifetime resident of Odin, she was a homemaker on the family farm.
Mrs. Schneweis was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church and Altar Society, both in Odin.
Survivors include a son, David Schneweis and wife Norma Jean, of Claflin; a daughter, Donna Schneweis of Topeka; four brothers, Robert Wondra, Art Wondra and Jerry Wondra, all of Great Bend, and Al Wondra of Odin; four sisters, Mary Ann Collins of Ellinwood, Margaret White and Jeanie Hapes, both of Great Bend, and Rita Legleiter of St. Marys; and a granddaughter, Jacque Schneweis. She was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Wondra; and two sisters, Alice Wondra and Sister Edith Wondra.
Vigil service will be at 6:30 p.m. today followed by an Altar Society Rosary. Mary Lucille Williamson 1929 - 2008
ST. JOHN — Mary Lucille Williamson, 79, died Sept. 7 at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Unit in Larned. The daughter of Glenn and Thelma (Shaw) Foss, she was born Dec. 23, 1929, at Lawrenceville, Ill. A homemaker and lifelong resident of the St. John area, she attended the New Hope United Methodist Church and graduated from St. John High School in 1947. On May 15, 1949, she married A. Jack Williamson at Ulysses. He died in 1999.
Survivors include, a son, Robert Williamson of St. John; four daughters, Anita Layman of Fremont, Neb., Dena Allison of Cambridge, Karen Cole of Summers, Ark., and Mary Jane Felke of Ellinwood; a sister, Martha Mitchell of Inman; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Phyllis Ann Foss.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday at Minnis Chapel in St. John, with the Rev. Linda Toms presiding. Burial will be in Fairview Park Cemetery in St. John.

Gene A. Boeck 1961 - 2008
HOISINGTON — Gene A. Boeck, 47, died Sept. 5 at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. He was born May 15, 1961, at Humboldt, Neb., the son of Robert Dean and Dorothy Richardson Boeck. Eugene was a maintenance mechanic for Great Bend Packing. He was a longtime resident of Hoisington.
Survivors include a companion, Tina Boeck, of the home; a son, Tyler Boeck, of the home; three daughters, Adrian Boeck of Hoisington, and Lexi Boeck and Abby Boeck, both of the home; his mother, Dorothy Boeck, of Hoisington; and three sisters, Rhonda, Barbara and Brenda. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Boeck, and by his brother, Bob Boeck.

Judy K. (Leiker) Laux 1945 - 2008
SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — Judy K. (Leiker) Laux, 63, of Schaumburg, died Aug. 16 in Barrington, Ill. The funeral Mass for her was held at 10 a.m. Aug. 19, at St. Edna Catholic Church, Arlington Heights, Ill. Interment was private. Born Jan. 19, 1945, in Albuquerque, N.M., she was the daughter of Ernest and Roberta Leiker. She graduated from Great Bend High School in 1963 and from Fort Hays State University in 1967. A certified public accountant, she received a master’s degree from Northern Illinois University.
She was the loving mother of Angela (Jason) Crase; loving grandmother of Jonathan and Samantha; dear sister of Linda (Hubert) Hess and of Janice (Conce) Magana of Bel Aire; and dear aunt of Chris, Eric, Felicia, Melissa and Meredith.

Homer L. Bird 1923 - 2008
ALBERT — Homer L. Bird, 85, died Aug. 30 at Mount Hope. Born April 6, 1923, in Independence, he was the son of Harry C. and Ruth Buckles Bird. He grew up on and farmed land two miles east of Albert that was originally acquired by his grandfather, passed on to his father, and then passed on to him and his brother Ted. After graduating from Great Bend High School, he attended Kansas State University for two years, then enlisted in the United States Army on May 3, 1944. While on leave between assignments, Homer married his high school sweetheart, Virginia Marie Amerine, on May 29, 1944. He then served in the United States Army Air Corps until he was discharged on Sept. 17, 1945. Homer was a B-17 bomber pilot during World War II and flew 28 combat missions over northern Italy, the Balkans and Germany. After the war, he returned to the family farm where he and Virginia raised their son, Lynn, and daughter, Lisa.
In addition to his love of the land and his family, Homer was passionate about the game of golf, winning or placing high in many tournaments throughout Kansas as a younger man and later in his life maintaining his health as long as possible in order to play one more time even if it was just a few holes. In his younger days, he enjoyed bowling, playing bridge and dancing. Throughout his life, he was an avid K-State Wildcats fan and loved to tell stories and jokes. Homer was quick to offer a helping hand to anyone in need and spent time volunteering with the Great Bend Evening Lions Club, RSVP and the Barton County Historical Society.
Mr. Bird was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Evening Lions Club, the American Legion Argonne Post No. 180 and the Elks Lodge No. 1127, all of Great Bend.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Bird, of Mount Hope; a son, Lynn Bird and wife Patricia of Boulder, Colo.; a daughter, Lisa Riedel and husband Bert of Andale; four grandchildren, Jason Bird, Joshua Bird, Stefanie (Bird) Stafford and Bret Riedel; and three great-grandchildren, Colby Bird, Logan Bird and Jaden Stafford; and five siblings, Daniel Keith Bird of Danville, Calif., Jean McClelland of Sacramento, Calif.; Kathy Metcalfe of Fairfield, Calif.; Ted Bird of Albert and Max Bird of Tulsa, Okla.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, at Bryant Funeral Home, 1425 Patton Road, Great Bend, with the Rev. Gary Brooks officiating. Inurnment will be at the Hillcrest Memorial Park in Great Bend. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. CLAFLIN — Marie T. Demel, 86, died Sept. 4 at Promise Regional Medical Center, Hutchinson. She was born Nov. 6, 1921, at Olmitz, the daughter of John and Judith (Mater) Schneider. A homemaker, she married Clarence S. Demel on May 27, 1947, at Olmitz. He died June 18, 1996. She lived in Odin for 61 years, moving from Olmitz.
Mrs. Demel was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and its Altar Society, Odin.
Survivors include two daughters, Pauline Tajchman of Great Bend and Judith Demel of Claflin; and two sisters, Delores Frenzl of Hoisington and Mildred Reif of Claflin. She was preceded in death by a brother, Martin Schneider.

Moyne Warnken 1920 - 2008
Moyne Warnken, 88, of Great Bend, died Sept. 4 at Central Kansas Medical Center, Great Bend. Born Jan. 26, 1920, at Nekoma, she was the daughter of Albert and Mintie Guhl Seltmann. She married Allen Marvin Warnken on Jan. 26, 1941, at Great Bend. He died Nov. 13, 1996. A homemaker on the family farm, she was a Great Bend resident since 1941, coming from Nekoma.
Mrs. Warnken was a member of Eagles Auxiliary No. 646 of Great Bend.
Survivors include two sons, Gordon Warnken and wife Jane, of Hutchinson, and Kenny Warnken of Great Bend; a daughter, Verla Gorham of Valley Center; a sister, Juanita Olson of Houston, Texas; a daughter-in-law, Laura Warnken Pivonka of Timken; eight grandchildren, Rick Warnken, Lachele Greathouse, Brenda Barrett, Kim Gorham, Barbara Luikart, Teresa Hawkinson, Erik Warnken and Traci Brackbill; and 13 great-grandchildren. ELLIJAY, Ga. — Florence Mardell Norris, 81, died July 21 at Ellijay, Ga. Born July 15, 1927, near Walnut, she was the daughter of Claus and Ethel Susan Franklin Augustin. A longtime resident of Larned, moving from Chase, she was a homemaker. She married William L. Norris on Jan. 10, 1948, in Kansas City, Kan. He died April 14, 2006.
Mrs. Norris was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Altar Society, both of Larned.
Survivors include a son, Larry of Ellijay, Ga.; a brother, Bennie C. Augustin of Girard; three grandsons and three great-grandchildren.

SPEARVILLE — Fannie M. Hubbell, 93, died Sept. 2 at Presbyterian Manor of the Plains, Dodge City. She was born Sept. 18, 1914, in Ford County, the daughter of Carl and Mary (Diers) McKee. She married Gail L. Hubbell on Dec. 25, 1934. He preceded her in death on April 13, 1975. She enjoyed gardening, crafts, and playing cards as well as traveling.
Mrs. Hubbell was a member of Federated Church and Past Worthy Matron and life member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include a son, Carl Hubbell, and wife Jane of Spearville; a daughter, Deana Brandenburg and husband Alan of Bruning, Neb.; nine grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Margaret Rosena DeHaven 1911 - 2008
Margaret Rosena DeHaven, 97, of Great Bend, died Aug. 31 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born Jan. 1, 1911, in Solomon, the daughter of John and Clara Donmyer Walker. On Sept. 2, 1934, she married Charles Sylvester DeHaven in Abilene. He died Sept. 18, 1984. She then married Charles Dike on Sept. 6, 1986, in Council Grove. He died in July 2001. A resident of Great Bend since 1966, coming from Hoisington, she was the owner and operator of Brentwood, LTD., retiring in 1982. After retirement she was employed at West, LTD.
Mrs. DeHaven was a member of the First United Methodist Church and a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, both of Great Bend.
Survivors include three sons, John W. DeHaven and wife Ashley of Little Rock, Ark., Kent C. DeHaven and wife Charlotte of Midlothian, Va., and Denny L. DeHaven and wife Martha of Fort Worth, Texas; a stepdaughter, Charlene Dike Young and husband Jim of Independence; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Revida Switzer and Sarah Ann “Sadie” Loyd.

RIVERTON, Wyo. — Larry Alan Fox, 52, died Aug. 29 at his home in Riverton, Wyo. Born Nov. 21, 1955, in Larned, he was the son of Melvin Fox and Barbara Fox Hammond. After growing up in Kansas he lived in Guymon, Okla., for several years, then Rawlins, Wyo. for seven years, and recently moved to Riverton, Wyo. He was employed by Compressco Field Service for 20-plus years, as a regional supervisor for natural gas production. He married Colleen Ingram on Feb. 25, 2006, in Guymon, Okla.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; two daughters, Emily Fox and Jennifer Fox, both of Salina; a stepson, Gordon Boyer of Riverton, Wyo.; two stepdaughters, Shonita Fox of Great Bend and Synthia Boyer of Wichita; his parents, Melvin and Barbara Fox of Wilson; six brothers, Terry Fox of Pratt, Gary Fox of Offerle, Rocky Fox of Pratt, Matt Fox of Hays, Calvin Fox of Great Bend and Roger Fox of Hoxie; two sisters, Bev Wesley of Lake City and Judy McCord of Reno, Nev.; and two grandchildren.

Mary C. Carrier 1928 - 2008
TURON — Mary C. Carrier, 79, died Aug. 31 at Hospice of Reno County in Hutchinson. She was born Nov. 19, 1928, in Turon, the daughter of Clarence and Sarah (Wertz) Elliot. A resident of Hutchinson for the last six months, formerly of Great Bend, she was a cook. On May 31, 1948, she married Maurice Carrier at Turon. He died April 3, 1996.
She is survived by two daughters, Kathy Palmer, Hutchinson, and Tracy Thacker, Great Bend; a son, David Carrier, California; two brothers, Vernon Elliot, Sublette, and Claude Elliot, Ellinwood; a sister, Catherine Bartholomew, Ellinwood; 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant son Lloyd, a half brother Jake Wertz, a granddaughter Heather Palmer and a great-granddaughter Mairanne Gutierrez.

Homer L. Bird 1923 - 2008
ALBERT — Homer L. Bird, 85, died Aug. 30 at Mount Hope. Born April 6, 1923, in Independence, he was the son of Harry C. and Ruth Buckles Bird. He married Virginia Marie Amerine on May 29, 1944, in Great Bend. A lifetime resident of rural Albert, he was a farmer. He loved playing golf, bowling, bridge and watching sporting events. He was an avid Kansas State University football and basketball fan.
Mr. Bird was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Evening Lions Club, the American Legion Post No. 180, and the Elks Lodge No. 1127, all of Great Bend.
Survivors include his wife, of Mount Hope; a son, Lynn Bird and wife Patricia of Boulder, Colo.; a daughter, Lisa Riedel and husband Bert of Andale; three brothers, Daniel Keith Bird of Danville, Calif., Ted Bird of Albert and Max Bird of Tulsa, Okla.; two sisters, Jean McClelland of Sacramento, Calif., and Kathleen Metcalfe of Fairfield, Calif.; four grandchildren, Jason Bird, Joshua Bird, Stefanie Stafford and Bret Riedel; and three great-grandchildren, Colby Bird, Logan Bird and Jaden Stafford.

Charles P. Converse 1923 - 2008
Charles P. Converse, 85, died Aug. 31 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. Born Jan. 15, 1923, at St. Rose Hospital in Great Bend, he was the son of Percy E. A. and Helen Ann Pfister Converse. He married Nancy Johnson in 1970, in Aurora, Colo. He had been a resident of Great Bend since 1970, coming from the Radium area where he graduated from Radium High School. He attended Fort Hays State University, where he was a member member of Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity. He left college to serve in the U.S. Army for three years in the North African and European theaters during World War II.
A farmer for most of his life in Stafford County and in western Kansas, he retired from farming and returned to school at Barton County Community College to become a certified nurse aide. Upon completion of the course, he worked at Integrated Health Services, now Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center, for five years before retiring fully. He especially enjoyed traveling, musical and theatrical productions, and visits to the zoo, walking there as long as he was able.
He was a member of the Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick, American Legion Argonne Post 180, and the Great Bend Zoological Society, all of Great Bend. He was a charter member of the Larned Veterans of Foreign Wars in Larned and a life member of the VFW. For a number of years he was an active member of the Barton County chapter of People to People, founded by President Dwight D. Eisenhower to promote world peace.
Survivors include his wife of the home, and a brother, Keith C. Converse of rural Pawnee Rock; his brother-in-law, J. Leo Johnson and wife Elizabeth of Aurora, Colo.; two nephews, Thomas B. Johnson of Aurora, Colo., and Andrew L. Johnson and wife Chassity of Littleton, Colo., one niece, Ann Johnson Hahn of Westminster, Colo.; a great-niece, Therese (Tara) Hahn and two great-nephews, Evan and Marc Johnson, as well as many cousins. Also surviving is Foreign Exchange son, Dr. Mauro Horowitz, wife Zaida and family of Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.
Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. today at Bryant Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Great Bend with Father Reginald A. Urban officiating. Burial will be at the Dominican Sisters’ Resurrection Cemetery in Great Bend with military graveside rites conducted by a Fort Riley Honor Guard. Friends may visit from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, all at Bryant Funeral Home. Helen Marie Brack Dale 1919 - 2008
BEAVERCREEK, Ohio — Helen Marie Brack Dale, 89, was born in Galatia on Aug. 9, 1919, and passed away on Aug. 17 at Crestview Manor in Beavercreek, Ohio. The youngest of four children born to Ben F. Brack and Marie Galyardt Brack, Helen was preceded in death by her two brothers, Henry and Leland, and her sister, Lucille Grant. On Jan. 21, 1938, she married Dr. Joseph Edward Dale II in Castle Rock, Colo. Her husband, Joe Dale, passed away Oct. 28, 1991, in Fort Collins, Colo. Helen and Joe were long-term residents of Garden City and of Fort Collins, Colo. She was a gracious lady and will be remembered for her devotion to her church, to her family, and service to her community.
She is survived by her five children and their families: J. Jed and Gail (Page) Dale of Beavercreek, Ohio; Don and Karen (Love) Dale of Coronado, Calif.; Mary (Dale) and Eldon Misegadis of Great Bend; Tom and Jane (Jordan) Dale of St. John; and Sarah (Dale) and Harry Beyne of Northbrook, Ill. Helen is also survived by eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at Tobias Funeral Home in Beavercreek, Ohio, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6. Friends and family may gather at 10 a.m. Interment will be Sept. 29 at Granville Cemetery in Fort Collins, Colo. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Fort Collins, Colo., on Sept. 29. Evelyn Visser Smith 1931 - 2008
Evelyn Visser Smith, 77, of Great Bend, died Aug. 30 at Hospice House, Hutchinson. She was born Jan. 31, 1931, at Riley, the daughter of William Edward and Martha Esther Sylvester Visser. She married Xenophon P. Smith, Jr., Feb. 15, 1953, at Riley. He died Jan. 28, 2000. She was a Great Bend resident since 1953, coming from Topeka.
Mrs. Smith was the Executive Director of Great Bend Housing Authority for 17 years. retiring in 1993. Previously she had been employed by Santa Fe Hospital, Topeka, Drs. Leiker, Replogle, and McCallaster, Central Kansas Medical Center, and Fuller Brush Company, all of Great Bend.
She was a charter member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Great Bend. She was also a member of Beta Sigma Phi, Petal Pusher Garden Club, a former Girl Scout Leader, and Boy Scout Den Leader, Alzheimer’s Support Group, and the High Rise Kitchen Band, and the High Rise Board of Directors.
Survivors include two sons, Xenophon Phillip Smith and wife, Sharon, Marion, and Seaton V. Smith and wife Jill, Powell, Wyo.; two daughters, Marti S. Worman and husband Robert, Derby, and Denise A. Corliss and husband Roger, Livermore, Colo.; three brothers, Virgil Visser, Wakefield, Eugene Visser, Goff, and Albion Visser, Sidney, Neb.; ten grandchildren, Allison Smith, Memphis, Tenn., Alexa Smith, Marion, Forrest H. Smith, Powell, Wyo., Alyssa Smith, Powell, Wyo., Michael Crossland, Alvord, Texas, Tamera Worman, Derby, Cortney Hartz, Freemont, Neb., Chance Corliss, Bruning, Neb., Paige Parker, Fort Collins, Colo., and Kendal Corliss, Bruning, Neb.; and one great-grandchild, Lukas Corliss. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by four brothers, George Visser, LeRoy Visser, Harold Visser, and Kenneth Visser.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. today at Trinity United Methodist Church, Great Bend, with Pastor Julie Fields, officiant. Interment will be at Great Bend Cemetery, Great Bend.
