Rachel B. “Brownie” Johnson 1917 - 2008

HENDERSON, Nev. — Rachel B. “Brownie” Johnson, 90, passed away peacefully on April 25, at the age of 90. She was born Aug. 5, 1917, in Galatia and was raised in Great Bend. In 1941 she moved to California, was married and had three sons. She resided in the southern California area for many years before moving to Henderson, Nev., to be near her eldest son.

Survivors include three sons, Jack Johnson and wife Shirley of Boulder City, Nev., Ron Johnson and wife Kim of Elk Grove, Calif., and Steve Johnson and wife Cherie of Libby, Mont.; two sisters, Louise Gunn of Great Bend and Lois Childers of Kingman, Ind.; two sisters-in-law, Eva Brown of Long Beach, Calif., and Jean Brown of Silver City, N.M.; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Ethel Brown; two brothers, Leon Brown and Douglas Brown; and two sisters, Ulanda Dorfshaffer Pugh and Ava Cole.

Graveside memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, at Great Bend Cemetery in Great Bend with the Rev. William F. Johnson presiding. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorials are suggested to the First Christian Church in care of the funeral home. Eldeen Kroeker 1920 - 2008

Eldeen Kroeker, 88, of Great Bend, died Aug. 29 at Great Bend Health & Rehabilitation Center, Great Bend. She was born Feb. 2, 1920, at Dundee, the daughter of Warren and Helena Unruh Moore. She married Al D. Kroeker on Sept. 14, 1941, at Pawnee Rock. He survives. She was a homemaker and worked as a cashier at Central Kansas Medical Center before her retirement. She was a lifetime resident of Great Bend.

Mrs. Kroeker was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ, Women Fellowship Book Study, American Legion Auxiliary and VFW Auxiliary, all of Great Bend.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, of the home, include a son, Robert Kroeker and wife Missy of Overland Park; a daughter, Sally O’Connor and husband John of Great Bend; two sisters, Thelia Brack of Great Bend and Arvella Gutman of Brandon, Vt.; and three grandchildren, Nick Kroeker and wife Jill of Roeland Park, Andy Kroeker of Lawrence and Erin O’Connor of Hutchinson.

A graveside memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Pawnee Rock Cemetery, with the Rev. Gary Brooks officiant. Inurnment service will take place at the cemetery. There will be no visitation. Donations to memorial funds for the First Congregational United Church of Christ or for the American Heart Association may be made in care of Bryant Funeral Home, Great Bend. Rose C. Bahr 1918 - 2008

OLMITZ — Rose C. Bahr, 90, died Aug. 29 at Sedgwick Healthcare Center in Sedgwick. She was born Jan. 14, 1918, at Pfeifer, the daughter of Alois (Albert) and Katherine (Meder) Jacobs. She married Paul F. Bahr on Jan. 7, 1946, at Pfeifer. He died on Aug. 28, 1999. A longtime Olmitz resident, she was a homemaker.

Mrs. Bahr was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church and Altar Society of Olmitz.

Survivors include a son, John Bahr and wife Ann of Wichita; three daughters, Theresa Herrman and husband Ron of Austin, Texas, Barbara Kuntz and husband Leon of Park and Florence Curtis of Wichita; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Bill, Jerome and Clem Jacobs; an infant brother, Joseph Jacobs; and five sisters, Alice Jacobs, Frances Jacobs, Pauline Breit, Mary Haberman and Dorothy Dreiling.

A wake service will take place at 7 p.m. on Monday, followed by an Altar Society Rosary at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Ann Catholic Church in Olmitz, with Father Ultan Murphy officiating. Burial will be at St. Ann Cemetery in Olmitz. Visitation is from 1 to 8 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the church or Meals on Wheels of Great Bend in care of the funeral home. Virginia Polen Galyardt 1924 - 2008

ELLINWOOD — Virginia Polen Galyardt, 84, died Aug. 30 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. She was born Feb. 9, 1924, at Marietta, Ohio, the daughter of Clem and Eva Herbers Polen. She married Milton Galyardt on July 1, 1940. He died on Dec. 10, 1990. An Ellinwood resident since 1940, she was retired from Peoples State Bank, after 15 years as custodian. She also worked at the Ellinwood Dairy Queen.

Mrs. Galyardt was a member of the United Methodist Church. She was a former president of United Methodist Women and was a member of Joy Sunday School class, former chairman of Martha Circle, manager of the UMW Thrift Shop, a Brownie Scout leader and treasurer of the Parent Teachers Association.

Survivors include two daughters, Judith Schartz and Linda Rowe, both of Ellinwood; five grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Ellinwood, with the Revs. John Schmitt and Bill Wolf officiating. Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. on Monday and 9 a.m. to noon on Tuesday at Kimple Funeral Home in Ellinwood. Burial will be in Lakin-Comanche District Cemetery in Ellinwood. Memorials are suggested to the Virginia Galyardt Memorial Fund in care of Kimple Funeral Home.

Vernon Russell Eugene Eitel 1911 - 2008

LARNED — Vernon Russell Eugene Eitel, 97, died Aug. 28 at St. Joseph Long Term Care in Larned. He was born Feb. 23, 1911, in Schaffer, the son of Henry and Emma Keggleor Eitel. An area resident since 1978, moving from Colorado, he was a farmer. On Jan. 21, 1940, he married Nellie K. Bley at Frederick. She died Nov. 27, 2004.

Survivors include, a daughter, Leola F. Eitel of Denver, Colo., and a sister-in-law, Sophia Bley, of Larned. He was preceded in death by a son, Larry E. Eitel, and a sister, Ethel B. Eitel.

Memorial graveside service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at the Rozel Cemetery, with the Rev. John Hester presiding. Friends may sign the register from 1 to 8 p.m. today at the Beckwith Mortuary Chapel in Larned. Inurnment will be in the Rozel Cemetery in Rozel.

Michael John Bliss 1963 - 2008

ST. JOHN — Michael John Bliss, 45, of Salina, died Aug. 22 at Winfield. He was born July 20, 1963, at Great Bend, the son of Jerry and Dorothy (Madsen) Bliss. He graduated from St. John High School in 1982 and from Pratt Community College with a degree in building trades. He worked with his father at Keith’s Business Systems and Renke Office Products in Pratt. He also worked for Wal-Mart in the Loss-Prevention Department and in the oilfield at Pratt.

Survivors include his companion, Rhonda Nickelson, Salina; his mother of St. John; one brother, Dan Bliss, Littleton, Colo.; and one sister, Rhonda Matthews, Parker, Colo. He was preceded in death by his father.

Graveside inurnment service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Fairview Park Cemetery, St. John, with George Shelton presiding. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the United Methodist Church or donor’s choice in care of Minnis Chapel, St. John.

Donald E. Hlavaty 1931 - 2008

BELLA VISTA, Ark. — Donald E. Hlavaty, 77, died Aug. 24 at the Highlands Health Care, Bella Vista. He was born Aug. 8, 1931, in Olmitz, to Erwin and Clara (Riedel) Hlavaty. He was raised and educated in the Olmitz area. He married JoAnn Barland on Oct. 14, 1966, at Great Bend. He farmed in the Olmitz area, retiring and moving to Bella Vista, Ark., in 1982.

Mr. Hlavaty was an active member of St. Bernard Catholic Church and was a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus.

Survivors include his wife, of the home; and one brother, Joseph Hlavaty and his wife, Justina, of Olmitz. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Bernard Catholic Church, Bella Vista, with Father Andy Smith officiating. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until service time at the church. Graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Friday in the St. Ann Cemetery in Olmitz.

Florence E. Steitz 1925 - 2008

COLBY — Florence E. Steitz, 83, died Aug. 25 at Colby Care Center. She was born April 7, 1925, at Russell, to Henry and Lydia (Kraft) Steinert. She married Harold Steitz on June 20, 1945 at Otis. He died Jan. 3, 1999. A homemaker, she had been a Colby resident for the past 30 years, coming from Hays.

Mrs. Steitz was a Lutheran and enjoyed doing craft work.

Survivors include a son, Kenneth D. Steitz, and his wife Mary, San Diego, Calif.; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Clara Wilhelm, and two brothers, Paul Steinert and Alvin Steinert.

Memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington with the Rev. Garry Dassow officiating. Inurnment will be at the Hoisington Cemetery in Hoisington. Danielle L. Poland 1962 - 2008

HOISINGTON — Danielle L. Poland, 45, died Aug. 25 at Hutchinson Hospital, Hutchinson. Born Oct. 7, 1962, at Hays, she was the daughter of Daniel F. and Cecilia (Leiker) Schmidt. She graduated from Hays High School and Fort Hays State University with a Master of Science degree in education. She married Dennis Poland on July 13, 1985, in Hays. A resident of Hoisington since 1985, she was the principal at Claflin High School, USD 354.

Mrs. Poland was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Hoisington, the Kansas Association of Secondary School Principals and the United School Administrators.

Survivors include her husband, of the home; a son, Darin Poland, of the home; a daughter, Darci Poland, of the home; mother, Cecilia Schmidt of Hays; a brother, Daniel Schmidt of Albany, Ore.; and three sisters, Diane Radke of Tulsa, Okla., Debra Brecheisen of North Bend, Ore., and Donna Schmidt of Topeka. She was preceded in death by her father, Dan F. Schmidt, and a brother, David Schmidt.

Wake service will be at 7 p.m. today followed by an Altar Society Rosary, both at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Hoisington. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church with Father Dwight Birket officiating. Graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Cemetery in Hays. Glenna Mae Yoakum 1918 - 2008

Glenna Mae Yoakum, 90, of Great Bend, died Aug. 22 at Riverside Village, Wichita. She was born Feb. 9, 1918, in rural Sterling, the daughter of Harry O. and Florence Bennett Horton. She married Jack K. Yoakum on March 5, 1955, at Sterling. He died Dec. 30, 1993. A Great Bend resident since 1970, she was an elementary schoolteacher in Hutchinson and Great Bend. She graduated from Sterling High School in 1936, attended Sterling College and received her teaching degree from Emporia State Teachers College.

Mrs. Yoakum was a member of First United Methodist Church, Great Bend; Daughters of the American Revolution; Retired Teachers of Barton County; and Epsilon Sigma Alpha International-Zeta Gamma Chapter.

Survivors include a sister-in-law, Jean Yoakum Bradfield, Hugoton; two nieces, Mary Horton Knecht and husband Sam of Wichita, and Janet Bradfield White and husband Ed of Moscow, Kan.; three nephews, Harry Horton and wife Tammy of Sewell, N.J., Joe Horton and wife Joyce of Tribune and Shelby Bradfield and wife Maggie of Santa Fe, N.M.; four great-nephews, three great-great-nieces and three great-great-nephews. A brother, Kenneth “Sparky” Horton, and a sister, Pauline Horton, preceded her in death.

A graveside service will be at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Sterling Community Cemetery, Sterling, with the Rev. Gary Brooks officiating. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday at Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling, with the family present. Russell K. Weathers 1922 - 2008

Russell K. Weathers, 86, of Great Bend, died Aug. 23 at Central Kansas Medical Center, Great Bend. Born July 15, 1922, at Great Bend, he was the son of Chester “Brownie” and Fern Pettit Weathers. He married Marian Mull on June 2, 1946, at Great Bend. He was a retired farmer and a World War II Army veteran.

Mr. Weathers was a member of First United Methodist Church, Great Bend. He was a member and past commander of American Legion Post No. 180, a former member of VFW Post No. 3111 and the Elks BPO Lodge No. 1127; a former board member of Barton County Farm Bureau, was a township board member for 24 years and a member of the B-29 Memorial Committee.

Survivors include his wife, of the home; a son, Doug Weathers and wife Gaylene, Wichita; a daughter, Connie Lanam and husband Wayne, Independence, Mo.; three grandchildren, Stephanie Allen, Brad Weathers and Bret Weathers; and three great-grandchildren, Grant Allen, Grace Allen and Morgan Weathers.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Bryant Funeral Home, Great Bend, with the Rev. Gary Brooks officiating. Interment will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Great Bend, with military honors. Stephen Maurice Link 1951 - 2008

PLAINVILLE — Stephen Maurice Link, 57, died Aug. 24 at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita. He was born June 7, 1951, at Lyons, the son of Paul Maurice and Dixie Lee Simpson Link. He married Marie Walters in 1970 at Hays, and married Judy Urban in 1972, also at Hays. He was a Plainville resident since 1972, formerly of Hays. He was an oilfield laborer and co-owner of Lucky Iron Oil Production.

Mr. Link was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Plainville.

Survivors include a son, Buck Link, of Phoenix, Ariz.; three daughters, Dawn Stephanie Schramm of Middleton, Wis., Brandy Rene Lee of Fort Morgan, Colo., and Terri Rae Link of Newberg, Ore.; his mother, Dixie Link, of Salina; a brother, Randy Link, of Wichita; two sisters, Vicki Black of Stillwater, Okla., and Paula Link of Salina; and six grandchildren.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Ellinwood, with Father Dwight Birket officiant. Burial will be at Lakin-Comanche District Cemetery, Ellinwood. Bobby Ann Johnson 1925 - 2008

Bobby Ann Johnson, 82, of Great Bend, died Aug. 24 at her residence. She was born Sept. 8, 1925, at Elk Springs, Mo., the daughter of Druard Clyde and Ola Mable Meador Parish. She married Dean Johnson on July 17, 1954, at Great Bend. He died March 21, 1996. She was a homemaker and a resident of Great Bend since 1936, coming from Elk Springs, Mo.

Mrs. Johnson was a member of St. John Episcopal Church, Great Bend.

Survivors include two sons, Lloyd Johnson and wife Kathy, and Kermit Johnson, all of Great Bend; three daughters, Connie Johnson, Jill Johnson and Alethea Peschka and husband Joe, all of Great Bend; a sister, Jane Keil and husband Melvin of Great Bend; six grandchildren, Lisa Smith and husband Kenneth, Joe Peschka, Jr., and wife Dycie, Thomas Peschka and wife Jamie, Shawn Johnson and wife Candi, Lottie Johnson and Scott Johnson; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Ruby Brewington and Mary Ruth Smith.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. John Episcopal Church, Great Bend, with Father Mark Cowell officiating. Interment will be at the Great Bend Cemetery. Suzanne Marcella Anderson 1925 - 2008

Suzanne Marcella Anderson, 83, died Aug. 21 at her residence in Great Bend. She was born Jan. 25, 1925, at Valders, Wis., the daughter of Nels and Susanna Prehn Peterson. She married Alvin F. Anderson on May 14, 1947, at Racine, Wis. He died Dec. 4, 1993. A homemaker, she had been a resident of Great Bend since 1995, coming from Racine, Wis.

Mrs. Anderson was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, Grand Rapids, Minn.

Suzanne rose above the challenges posed upon her as being a wife of a career Air Force serviceman, rearing a family while supporting her husband while he served his country.

Survivors include a son, Brent Anderson, of Grand Rapids, Minn.; two daughters, Daun Anderson of Great Bend and Marcia Jablonski of Duluth, Minn.; a sister, Ida Mae Dresen, of Denver; and four grandchildren, Janelle Jablonski, James Jablonski, Christine Boisjoli and Dawn Fox. She was preceded in death by six brothers and sisters and one grandchild, Kyle Anderson.

Norma Waters 1918 - 2008

WESTMINSTER, Colo. — Norma Waters, 89, died Aug. 21 at the Retreat at Church Ranch, Westminster. She was born Dec. 22, 1918, at Emporia, the daughter of John and Bertha Brown Taylor. She married Raymond A. Waters June 8, 1940, at Emporia. He died Dec. 18, 1968. She was a teacher for USD 428, Great Bend, until her retirement. She had lived in Westminster, Colo., since 1993, coming from Great Bend.

Mrs. Waters was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ in Great Bend and of the Kansas State Teachers’ Association.

Survivors include a son, Errol Waters and wife Jaine of Broomfield, Colo.; a sister, Nelda Rohbran, Clover, S.C.; two grandchildren, Jennifer Waters and Scott Waters and wife Brook; and one great-grandson, Tyler Waters. She was preceded in death by her husband, one daughter, Lynda Waters, and one brother, Jack E. Taylor.

There will be a private service at a later date. Interment will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Great Bend. Memorial donations are suggested to the Great Bend High School Scholarship Fund. Condolences may be sent and notice viewed at www.bryantfh.net.

Pauline E. Dralle Omlor 1918 - 2008

Pauline E. Dralle Omlor, 90, died Aug. 23 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation, Great Bend. She was born Jan. 9, 1918, at Seward, the daughter of Charles Emil and Julia Connor Dralle. She married Noel Omlor of Larned on Dec. 25, 1940. He died Dec. 19, 2004. She was a homemaker and a resident of Great Bend since 1979, coming from Seward. She attended the Smallwood School, graduated from Radium High School and attended Fort Hays State College for two years. She taught school in Stafford County for six years. Noel enlisted in the Army in 1942 and Pauline taught school. After Noel returned from the service, they farmed and raised their daughters. Noel worked at Brentwood for many years and Pauline worked as a clerk at Reisbig’s until they retired.

Mrs. Omlor was a member of First Christian Church, Great Bend.

Glenna Mae Yoakum 1918 - 2008

Glenna Mae Yoakum, 90, of Great Bend, died Aug. 22 at Riverside Village, Wichita. She was born Feb. 9, 1918, in rural Sterling, the daughter of Harry O. and Florence Bennett Horton. She married Jack K. Yoakum on March 5, 1955, at Sterling. He died Dec. 30, 1993. A Great Bend resident since 1970, she was an elementary schoolteacher in Hutchinson and Great Bend. She graduated from Sterling High School in 1936, attended Sterling College and received her teaching degree from Emporia State Teachers College.

Mrs. Yoakum was a member of First United Methodist Church, Great Bend; Daughters of the American Revolution; Retired Teachers of Barton County; and Epsilon Sigma Alpha International-Zeta Gamma Chapter.

Survivors include a sister-in-law, Jean Yoakum Bradfield, Hugoton; two nieces, Mary Horton Knecht and husband Sam of Wichita, and Janet Bradfield White and husband Ed of Moscow, Kan.; three nephews, Harry Horton and wife Tammy of Sewell, N.J., Joe Horton and wife Joyce of Tribune and Shelby Bradfield and wife Maggie of Santa Fe, N.M.; four great-nephews, three great-great-nieces and three great-great-nephews. A brother, Kenneth “Sparky” Horton, and a sister, Pauline Horton, preceded her in death.

A graveside service will be at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Sterling Community Cemetery, Sterling, with the Rev. Gary Brooks officiating. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday at Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling, with the family present. ARCADIA, La. — Funeral services were held for Alexzander Allen Weaver, 21 months, at 10 a.m. on Monday at Faith Christian Center in Arcadia. The Rev. Hilda Antee officiated. Interment followed at Simsboro Cemetery.

Alexzander was born Nov. 13, 2006, in Minden, La., to Jeffery and Justine Weaver. He entered into rest on Aug. 14 in Arcadia, La.

He is survived by his parents, Jeffery and Justine Sparks Weaver; grandparents, Jeffery and Cherry Sparks, Dale and Juli McIntire, John Stoss and Jerry and Kathy Weaver; great-grandparents, Ruth Sparks, Conception Sauseda, Ron and Jane Darling, Jim and Sue Casey, Mary Lou Weaver, Ed and Darlene Stoss; great-great-grandmothers, Blanche Doonan and Zita Darling; aunts Stephanie Hernandez, Juanita Stamps and Shelli Stoss; and uncles Matthew Sparks, Lucas Sparks, Christopher Sparks, Jason Weaver, John Stoss and Tevor Weaver.

Dennis Lee Franz 1946 - 2008

LARNED — Dennis Lee Franz, Ph.D, 62, died Aug. 21 at the Hospice of Salina. He was born April 4, 1946, in Great Bend, the son of LaVern E. and Zesper Skelton Franz. He was the executive director of EduKan. He was a former professor at Colby Community College, Fort Hays State University, Kansas State University and Kansas State University of Salina, and worked presently for EduKan of Great Bend. He served in Vietnam from January 1966 to January 1969.

Mr. Franz was a member of the First Christian Church, a lifetime member of the VFW and a former member of the Larned Rotary Club, all of Larned.

Survivors include one sister Phyllis Jean Roudybush, Annandale, Va.

Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First Christian Church, Larned, with the Rev. Dan Lundgren and Bert Biles, Ph.D, presiding. Clara Koch Bryant 1910 - 2008

ELLINWOOD — Clara Koch Bryant, 97, died Aug. 20 at Woodhaven in Ellinwood. She was born Nov. 10, 1910, in rural Great Bend, the daughter of William and Henrietta Lanterman Koch. A 1928 graduate of Ellinwood Rural High School, she was a lifelong Barton County resident. A farm wife, she married Harry L. Bryant on April 22, 1931, at Ellinwood. He died Jan. 27, 1998.

Mrs. Bryant was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, LWML, Dartmouth Social Club, and a community leader for the Dartmouth 4-H Club.

Survivors include two daughters, Eloise Jones of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Elinor Hiss and husband Lawrence of Ellinwood; a sister, Edna Manke of Lyons; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Lillie Manke and Mildred Ahrens, and two grandchildren, Michelle Revell and Bryan Hiss.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Ellinwood, with the Rev. Jeff Frakes officiating. Walter D. “Wally” Foote 1943 - 2008

CHASE — Walter D. “Wally” Foote, 65, died Aug. 18 three miles west of Chase on Highway 56. Born Aug. 17, 1943, in Los Angeles, Calif., he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilber Foote. A resident of Chase for three years, formerly of Rockport, Texas, he was a professional photographer.

Mr. Foote was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving during the Vietnam War. He also served in the United States Army and the National Guard.

Survivors include a longtime friend, Jodi Strasters, of the home; a son, Daniel Foote of Orlando, Fla.; and a daughter, Rosanna Foote of Kissimmee, Fla. He was preceded in death by his parents.

There will be no local service. Scattering of cremains will be in September in Lancaster, Calif., by his cousin, the Rev. Darrell Foote. Memorials are suggested to the Kidney Foundation in care of the funeral home.

A. Leon Westfall 1929 - 2008

A. Leon Westfall, 78, of Great Bend, died Aug. 19 at Galichia Heart Hospital, Wichita. He was born Sept. 13, 1929, at Oilton, Okla., the son of Amos L. and Beulah Turner Westfall. He married Dolores N. Deckert on Nov. 19, 1950, at Great Bend. She survives. He was a retired branch manager for Stanion Wholesale Electric. He was a resident of Great Bend for most of his life, coming from Oklahoma. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving with the United States Army Signal Corps.

Mr. Westfall was a member of the First Christian Church, VFW Post 3111, American Legion Argonne Post 180 and the Great Bend Foundation, and a former member of the Kiwanis Club, a former city councilman, Ambassador of the Chamber of Commerce and trustee of First Christian Church. He was also a member of the C.R. Aldrich Trust Committee for the Cheyenne Scoutland, Cheyenne District Scout executive, a former Boy Scout and Cub Scout master for Troop 155 and a coordinator of Cheyenne Scoutland. He was awarded the Silver Beaver Award, the highest award for adult BSA volunteers.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, of the home, include two sons, Larry Westfall and wife Jan, and Alan Westfall, all of Great Bend; two daughters, Karen Copeland and husband Greg of Wilson and Connie Remmert and husband Rick of Great Bend; two brothers, Bill Westfall of Great Bend and Kermit Westfall of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two sisters, Patricia Waggoner of New Mexico and Linda Edwards of Divide, Colo.; seven grandchildren, Tyler Remmert, Jenna Wornkey, Tia Bodine, Kaci Bodine, Ian Eeles, Emma Eeles and Audrea Wood; two great-grandchildren, Sydney Moos and Emmett Eeles; and six stepgrandchildren, Mike Copeland, Chris Dayton, Sam Copeland, Jane Mohr, Laura Carstens and Charlie Copeland. He was preceded in death by a son, Dale Westfall, and a brother, J.C. Westfall.

Hubert L. Condict 1925 - 2008

Hubert L. Condict, 83, died Aug. 19 at his home in Great Bend. He was born June 27, 1925, at Davenport, Okla., the son of Gus and Lena Condict. He graduated from Davenport High School in 1943. He married Geneva VanSandt in 1949 at Reno, Nev. She died in 1978. He entered the Army and served in Burma during World War II. He went to work for Halliburton, then later was called back to active duty and served overseas in the Korean War. He spent 40 years working for Halliburton at Hays, Russell, El Dorado, Hugoton, McPherson and Great Bend, retiring as assistant district manager in 1986.

Mr. Condict was a member of Trinity Methodist Church, Great Bend; Russell Masonic Lodge No. 177; the Russell Shrine Club; Scottish Rite and Isis Shrine, Salina; and the American Legion Post 180, VFW Post 3111, Elks Lodge and Sunflower Club, all of Great Bend.

Survivors include a son, Gary Condict, and wife Helen of Preston; two grandsons, Evan Condict of Wichita and Wade Condict of Lawrence, and his sister, Zelma James of Shelton, Wash. He was preceded in death by an infant son, a brother and two sisters.

Ruth D. McCauley, 86, of Great Bend, died Aug. 20 at Central Kansas Medical Center, Great Bend. She was born Nov. 25, 1921, at Gaylord, the daughter of Lloyd W. and Myrtle I. Everett Spicher. She married William M. “Bill” McCauley on April 13, 1941, at Topeka. He survives. She was a homemaker and a longtime Great Bend resident, coming from Holton.

Mrs. McCauley was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where she was a former deacon, Sunday school teacher and a member of the Rebekah Circle. Ruth was also a volunteer for the Red Cross, for the Bloodmobile, all in Great Bend.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, of the home, include a daughter, Melissa A. Borsick and husband Robert of Topeka; four grandchildren, Kylie Loupe, Connor Loupe, Lori Koelsch and Holly Borsick; and two great-grandchildren, Kaylee Koelsch and Braxton Hinson.

Conrad M.“C.M.” Brack 1929 - 2008

LAWRENCE — Conrad M. “C.M.” Brack, 79, died Aug. 17 at University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City. He was born March 5, 1929, in Larned, the son of Sol M. and Neva Strader Brack.

He graduated from Great Bend High School in 1947. He later attended Kansas University, and graduated from Fort Hays State University in 1954. He taught school briefly before entering the U.S. Army and serving during the Korean War.

He married Betty Armstrong on Dec. 10, 1960, in Great Bend. They moved to Lawrence in 1969.

Mr. Brack was a real estate broker from 1954 until his retirement in 2006. He was president and co-founder of the Great Bend Board of Realtors and a past member of the Great Bend Jaycees. He was an Eagle Scout, Order of the Arrow, and a Scoutmaster, and commander of American Legion Post 180 in Great Bend.

He was a longtime member of the Elks Club in Great Bend and Lawrence, and a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ in Great Bend.

Survivors include his wife, of the home; a son, Steve and wife Jenny, Lawrence; a daughter, Constance Brack, Hayward, Calif.; two brothers, Karl and Ned, both of Great Bend; seven nephews, five nieces, and one stepgrandson. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jack.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Inurnment will follow at Great Bend Cemetery. HOISINGTON — Lynn D. Shives, 81, died Aug. 18 at his residence. Born Nov. 18, 1926, in Hoisington, he was the son of William and Pansy (McClane) Shives. He married Clementine Billinger on May 7, 1951, at St. Peter, Kan. He was a retired oilfield worker and a longtime Hoisington resident.

Mr. Shives was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Hoisington, and Knights of Columbus Council No. 1521, also of Hoisington.

Ethelrita Clara Stein 1932 - 2008

WRIGHT — Ethelrita Clara Stein, 75, died Aug. 16 at her residence in Wright. Born Oct. 6, 1932, at Marienthal, she was the daughter of Henry and Minnie (Kuhl) Lampe. She married Floyd Frederick Stein on Sept. 1, 1954, in Dodge City. He preceded her in death on Dec. 25, 1993. After their marriage they lived in Wright until 1958 at which time they moved to Kinsley. In 1962 they returned to Wright. She graduated from the St. Anthony’s Nurse Training Program in Dodge City. She worked as a registered nurse for 47 years until retiring on April 1, 2000. Ethelrita loved spending time with her family, friends and traveling.

Mrs. Stein was member of St. Andrew Catholic Church and the Altar Society, both of Wright.

Survivors include four sons, Gary Stein and wife Bev of Wright, Alan Stein and wife Cindy of Great Bend, Kevin Stein of Phoenix, Ariz., and Robert Stein and wife Laura of Spearville; a daughter, Karla Schubert of Dodge City; three brothers, Dwaine Lampe and wife Louise and Darlow Lampe and wife Patty, all of Spearville, and Leander Lampe and wife Cindy of Mustang, Okla.; a sister, Ganell Jacobs and husband Pat of Burleson, Texas; 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Steven Joseph; a daughter, Jolene Marie; three brothers, Cletus, Quentin and Darrel; and three sisters, Frozine Greene, Mildred Schaffer and Beatrice Frank.

Jack Lee Sarff, 73, of Great Bend, died Aug. 17, at Hutchinson Hospital, Hutchinson. He was born Oct. 27, 1934, in Rock Rapids, Iowa, to Lee and Ellen (Julian) Sarff. He married Bonnie Wells on Sept. 22, 1956, in Doon, Iowa. He was retired from Bachman Specialties and had worked in the oilfield supply business from New Mexico to Colorado and Texas, spanning a career of over 40 years. He had lived in Great Bend since 1984.

Mr. Sarff was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, Great Bend, and American Legion Argonne Post 180, Great Bend, serving as post commander from 2004 to 2005. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean conflict.

Survivors include his wife, of the home; a daughter, Susan Baker and husband Dale of Crystal Lake, Ill.; and three grandchildren, Jennifer Baker, Jeffrey Baker and Stephen Baker all of Crystal Lake, Ill. He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Andrew Sarff Baker.

ARKANSAS CITY — Neil Thomas Retzer, 41, of Arkansas City, died Aug. 17, in Arkansas City. He was born March 9, 1967, to Gary John Retzer and Helen Fay (Geringer) in Breckenridge, Minn. He attended Wahpeton, N.D., schools. On May 20, 1995, he married Tammie Horton in Belle Plaine. The couple had three children. Neil operated Retzer Construction and was employed at Skyline since 2007.

He is survived by his children, Preston Retzer, Tyler Retzer and Tynil Retzer, all of Arkansas City; his father, Gary Retzer of Wahpeton, N.D.; mother, Helen Lee of Great Bend; five brothers, Gary Retzer of Wahpeton, Matthew Retzer of Moorhead, Minn., Jeff Lee of Kansas City, Mo., and Aaron Retzer and Ryan Retzer, both of Fargo, N.D.; four sisters, Kristine Barnard of Wahpeton, N.D., Terri Conzemius of Breckenridge, Minn., Pamela Meyer of Wahpeton and Wendy Lee of Prairie Village.

Memorial services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home in Arkansas City. Viola Axman 1926 - 2008

OLMITZ — Viola Axman, 81, died Aug. 18 at Reno County Hospice House, Hutchinson. She was born Oct. 5, 1926, at Odin, the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Lamatsch) Demel. She married Benedict F. (Ben) Axman on April 15, 1947, at Odin. He died July 17, 1993. She was a homemaker and farmer, and a lifetime resident of the Odin and Olmitz area.

Mrs. Axman was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church and Altar Society, both of Olmitz, and of Daughters of Isabella of Great Bend.

Survivors include four sons, Edward Axman and his wife Rose of Wichita, Dennis Axman and his wife Vicki of Great Bend, Ronald Axman and his wife Carmen of Houston, Texas, and Gary Axman of Otis; three daughters, Mary Ann Mazouch and her husband Gene of Great Bend, Jolene Mainzer and her husband Dave of Wichita, and Virginia Debes and her husband Frank of Odin; two brothers, Steve Demel of Odin and Jerome Demel of Rose Hill; a sister, Irene Mattas of Wilson; grandchildren, Chris, Michael, Greg, Stephen and Matthew Mazouch, Gina-Ann Axman Cole, A1C Benedict-Joseph Axman, Edward-Francis Axman, Karl Haberman, Lora Hess, David, Dan and Sara Debes, and Jesse, Teresa and Joanna Mainzer; great-grandchildren, Josephine and Katherine Mazouch, Logan and Lucas Hess, and Kori and Gavin Haberman. Caroline M. Pflughoeft 1927 - 2008

HOLYROOD — Caroline M. Pflughoeft, 81, died Aug. 16 at Ellinwood District Hospital, Ellinwood. Born April 24, 1927, at Lorraine, she was the daughter of Charles J. and Nora B. Soeken Heitschmidt. She married Homer Pflughoeft on Jan. 1, 1947, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Holyrood. He died March 17, 1993. She was a homemaker and also was employed at various places, such as Elkan in Ellsworth and the Jack and Jill in Holyrood. She had been a lifetime resident of the Claflin and Holyrood areas.

Mrs. Pflughoeft was a former member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, Holyrood, where she volunteered in many capacities. She was a current member of St. John Lutheran Church, Ellinwood.

Survivors included three sons, Roger Pflughoeft and wife Marilyn, of Wichita, Charles Pflughoeft and wife Brenda, of Branson, Mo., and Vernon Pflughoeft and fianceé Rita Clements, of Chase; 10 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Bobby Heitschmidt.

CHASE — Charles Alexander Miller Sr., 75, died Aug. 12. Born June 13, 1933 in Dodge City, he was the son of Orlando Miller and Arlie (Cox) Friesen. He was a self-employed contractor and worked in the oil fields for many years.

Survivors include Dorothy Miller, of the home; two sons, Guy Miller of Jefferson, Ore., and Charles A. Miller Jr., of Chase; five daughters, Julie Cunningham of Klamath Falls, Ore., Laurie Washington of Buxton, Ore., Leslie Mack of Salina, Michelle Osborn of Hampton, VA., and Lucinda Patton of Chase; a step-daughter, Patricia Carter of Salina; two step-sons, Daniel Simmons of Colby and Gabriel Simmons of Hutchinson; a brother, Robert Miller of Kalamazoo, Mich.; ex-wife, Shirley Cook of Jefferson, Ore.; 22 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by wife Sarah Jane; infant daughter, Roxanne; and two infant grandsons, Devin A. Washington and Devin S. Ward.

Elise M. Hill 1903 - 2008

Elsie M. Hill, 105, died Aug. 15, 2008, at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. Born May 6, 1903, at Taylorville, Ill., she was the daughter of George and Margaret Reese McKinney. She married Edward Russell June, 21, 1922, in St. John. He died April 5, 1945, in Pawnee Rock. She later married James Hill on Aug. 31, 1949, in Larned. He died Oct. 5, 1969, in Taylorville, Ill.

She had been a salesperson for a jewelry store in Taylorville, Ill., and later Doerr’s in Larned. She was a resident of Great Bend since 1984, coming from Taylorville, Ill. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Great Bend, participated in the High Rise Kitchen Band and in other various volunteer activities.

Survivors include: Nine grandchildren, Allen Tutak, Hays, Rick Tutak, Great Bend, Kent Tutak, Great Bend, Ray Tutak, Kingman, Frank Parrino, Detroit, Mich., Wade Russell, Los Angeles, Calif., Erin Russell, California, Tim Russell, Tucson, Ariz., and Sally Russell of North Carolina; numerous great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two great nephews, Gary French, Great Bend, and Terry French, Ellinwood; two nieces, Lois Ann Coover, Kinsley, and Linda Denton, Wichita; and numerous other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by: Two sons, Herbert A. Russell and Eddie M. Russell; one daughter, Doris Tutak; four brothers; and four sisters.

Milton Henry Rein 1925 - 2008

Milton Henry Rein, 83, died Aug. 14 at his home in Great Bend. Born April 7, 1925 in Bazine, he was the son of Henry and Marie Foos Rein. He married Ramona Greteman on Feb. 14, 1991 in Carroll County, Ark. She survives. He was a farmer.

Mr. Rein was a World War II veteran serving with the United States Navy during the invasion of Labuan Island, North West Borneo. He received the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal and the Phillipine Liberation Medal. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3111 of Great Bend.

Survivors include his wife; a step-son, Keith DeWitt and wife Julie of Des Moines, Iowa; a sister, Joyce Wegele and husband Leland of Otis; two sisters-in-law, Mary Stoneburner and husband Dale of Panora, Iowa, Jenny Beisch of Omaha, Neb. and Greta Steelmen and husband Jerry of Walker, Minn.; two nieces, LeAnn Wegele of Albert, and Paula Storm and husband Steve of Albert; and two step-grandchildren, Brandon DeWitt and Samantha DeWitt. He was preceded in death by his parents; step-father, Alex Karst; and a brother, LeRoy Rein.

Inurnment will be at Missouri State Veteran’s Cemetery in Springfield, MO. at a later date. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Robert Doonan 1917 - 2008

QUINLAN, TEXAS — Robert Doonan, 91, of Quinlan, Texas, peacefully passed away on Aug. 6 at his home with his loving wife by his side. Robert was born Feb. 27, 1917 to Clarence C. Doonan and Florence Bowyer Doonan in Dodge City. He graduated from Great Bend High School in 1936 and worked as a mechanic at E-Systems for 22 1/2 years. The family thanks their family and friends for their thoughts and prayers.

Mr. Doonan served as a member of the Masons and Eastern Star.

Survivors include his wife, Lila Kellogg of Quintan, Texas; two sons, Eldon Doonan of Port Orchard, Wash. and Donald Doonan and wife Sheryl of Farmersville, Texas; two daughters, Lois Ann Joy and Vivian Jensen and husband Ken, all of Port Orchard, Wash.; a brother, Wendell Doonan of Great Bend; two sisters Margarete McAnulla of Great Bend and Evelyn Graham of Clarkston, Wash..; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great great-grandchild.

Keith D. Prescott 1936 - 2008

LARNED — Keith D. Prescott, 71, died Aug. 15 at the Hays Medical Center in Hays. He was born Nov. 1, 1936, in Stafford County, the son of Lawrence Donaldson and Alpha Lenore Harman Prescott. A lifetime area resident, he was a mechanic-service manager at Ark Valley Implement and Chance Cadillac dealership, both of Larned. On Oct. 18, 1959, he married Beverly A. Dirks at the Mennonite Church in Pawnee Rock. She survives.

He was a member of the Church of Christ, Larned, Senior Companion Program, and served in the Navy from 1954 to 1958.

Survivors include: Three sons, Brian Prescott and wife Susanne, of Hudson, Michael Prescott and wife Pam, of Meriden and Faron Prescott and wife Sunshine of Hays; a daughter, Sabra Dupuis and husband Brian, of Larned; two brothers, Don Prescott, of Larned, and Daryl Prescott, of Garfield; two sisters, Doneva Sparks, of Junction City, and Valeta Mantz, of Garfield; and 10 grandchildren.

SALINA — Derion Lee Herl, 40, died Aug. 13. He was born Jan 18, 1968, in Great Bend. He was a restaurant chef.

He is survived by his parents, Donald Lee and Henrietta Huser Herl of Salina; his four daughters, Tiffany Bishop and husband, Donald, Salina, Amber Lamar and husband Steve, Kearney, Neb., Shana Vaquera and husband Jose, Salina, and Shawna Herl, Salina. He had one brother, Brannon Herl and wife Michelle, Dallas, Texas, and three sisters, Kimberly Jackson and fiancée, Burt Simpson, Salina, Jody Imler, Topeka and Danna Armes and husband Frank, Salina. Born March 2, 1927, in Kansas City, Kan., she was the daughter of Granville and Mattie Pauline (Engle) Gaunt. She was a member of the Kansas City Missouri Class of 1941. She married Robert D. Caraway on June 10, 1949, in Kansas City, Mo. A resident of Great Bend since 1950, she was a homemaker. She enjoyed children and was an outstanding artist.

Mrs. Caraway was a member of the Prince of Peace Catholic Parish, the American Legion Auxiliary, the China Dolls Club and was an art judge for the state fair.

OLMITZ — Mary Ann Goode, 85, died Aug. 13 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center, Great Bend. She was born Jan. 14, 1923, at Olmitz, the daughter of Adolpf and Anna Marie (Riedel) Bartonek. She married Fred A. Maneth at Olmitz. He died in 1963. She married Roy Goode at Wichita. He died in 1997. She was a Greenthumb for handicapped people in Ava, Mo., retiring in 1989, and also worked in the laundry business. She had been a longtime resident of Olmitz, moving to Ava, Mo., and back to Great Bend in 1990.

Mrs. Goode was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Olmitz.

Survivors include a sister, Esther Hildreth, Wichita. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Eugene and Vernon Bartonek.

Vernon J. Bellendir 1931 - 2008

Vernon J. Bellendir, 77, of Great Bend, died Aug. 11 at Via Christi St. Francis Regional Medical Center in Wichita. He was born Feb. 2, 1931, at Victoria, the son of Adam and Catherine Brungardt Bellendir. He married Elvira “Vera” Basgall on May 7, 1951, at Loretto. A retired farm store manager for CO-OP, he was a resident of Great Bend since 1955, after serving with the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Brian Bellendir of Great Bend; two daughters, Lynee Habiger and husband James of Kinsley and Tracy Ummen and husband Mark of Springfield, Va.; a brother, Marvin Bellendir of Victoria; three sisters, Bernadette Baier of La Crosse, Rita Scheck of Russell and Miriam Wasinger of Victoria; and six grandchildren, Audrey Bellendir, Adam Bellendir, Megan Habiger, Clayton Habiger, Christopher Ummen and Sarah Ummen. He was preceded in death by three brothers.

A vigil service with Knights of Columbus Rosary will take place at 7 p.m. today at Bryant Funeral Home. Gary Lee Dreher 1940 - 2008

RATON, N.M. — Gary Lee Dreher, 68, passed away on Aug. 4 in Raton. He was born May 25, 1940, the youngest of Anton and Lucina Dreher’s six children.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Albina.

He is survived by his wife Carla Dreher; one son, Kendall Dreher and wife Leanna of Park City; grandsons, Richard and Christopher Dreher of Park City; a granddaughter, Amanda Dreher, of Park City; brothers, Alvin Dreher and wife Hannah of Longmont, Colo., and Melvin Dreher and wife Eunice of Great Bend; and one sister, Irene Helms of Spearville.

Mr. Dreher lived in Park City 40 years, retiring as a city employee of Park City in 2005 and moving to Raton.

He is also survived by his wife’s family: mother-in-law, Lenore Offutt of La Crosse; sister-in-law, Charlotte Basgall and husband LeRoy of Russell; three brothers-in-law, Dennis Offutt and wife Ida of Folkston, Ga., Darrell Offutt and wife Sharon of Houston, Texas, and Don Offutt and wife Janet of Beloit; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Christian liturgy took place at 2 p.m. on Aug. 8 at the Chapel of Alderette-Pomeroy Funeral Home, with Deacon Thomas Alderette officiating.

Don L. Clark 1935 - 2008

Don L. Clark, 72, died Aug. 2 at Great Bend. He was born Aug. 19, 1935, at Great Bend, the son of Arthur B. and Ruby B. Avery Clark. A lifetime Great Bend resident, he was a truck driver and was employed by Essex as a security guard for the last 10 years until his retirement.

Mr. Clark was a U.S. Navy veteran. He was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3111, both in Great Bend.

He is survived by three sons, Scott A. Clark and wife Lupe, Houston, Texas, and Rick L. Clark and wife Stacy, and Randy L. Clark, and wife Cynthia, all of Great Bend; two daughters Pamela J. Thomas, Pratt, and Kristi D. Brown, Great Bend; one sister, Beverly Carlson and husband Richard, Seattle, Wash.; 12 grandchildren, Alexis Clark, Sophia Clark, Ryann Clark, Courtney Clark, Chase Clark, Seth Burress, Sharon Burress, Jason Thomas and wife Melinda, Brett Thomas, Brock Thomas, Dokkyn Heenan, and Joslyn Brown; and one great-grandson, Cale Thomas.

Cremation has taken place. There will be a private inurnment for the family at a later date, at Great Bend Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Bryant Funeral Home. Orville Richard “Dick” Campbell 1934 - 2008

HOISINGTON — Orville Richard “Dick” Campbell, 73, died Aug. 9 at the Hutchinson Hospital. Born Dec. 25, 1934, in Great Bend, he was the son of Orville Richard Campbell and Frances (Chlumsky) Campbell. He married Barbara Sue Hawkins on May 3, 1959. A resident of Hoisington since 1949, coming from the Susank area, he was a veteran of the U.S. Marines, serving in the Korean Conflict from 1953 to 1959, attaining the rank of Sergeant.

Mr. Campbell was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Masonic Lodge AF & M 331, Order of the De Molay, all of Hoisington; past local commander, past Seventh District Commander and Department of Area West Vice-commander of the Department of Kansas. Recently he served as the Seventh District Treasurer of the American Legion, was a member of the American Legion Post 286, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7428 and former Scout Master.

Survivors include his wife, Sue Campbell, of the home; a son, Robert Campbell of Hoisington; a daughter, Rana Campbell Lynn and husband Rick of Rio Rancho, N.M.; a daughter-in-law, Holly Campbell of Newirk, Ohio; four grandchildren, Shiree Campbell, Shelby Lynn, Courtney Campbell and Ian Lynn. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Russell S. Campbell; and three sisters, Janet Thompson, Geneva Reeder and Virginia Weeks.

Memorial service will be announced at a later date with inurnment at the Hoisington Cemetery. There will be no visitation, as cremation has taken place. Memorials are suggested to the Russell S. Edna Fern Hart 1920 - 2008

LARNED — Edna Fern Hart, 87, died Aug. 10 at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Larned. Born Oct. 21, 1920, in Ash Valley, she was the daughter of Horace Geoffrey and Mary Edith Shepherd Smith. A resident of Larned since 1965, moving from Los Angeles, Calif., she was a psychiatric aid at Larned State Hospital.

Mrs. Hart was a member of the Escue Chapel in Larned where she served as a missionary, former secretary and Sunday school superintendent and a member of the Eastern Star of Los Angeles, Calif.

Survivors include a daughter, Rose Kimble of Larned; two sisters, Ella Towns and Emma Jeane Bradley, both of Larned; three grandchildren, Michelle Kimble of Nevada, Iowa, Davonna Walker of Hope, Ark., and Edwinna Kimble of Dodge City; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Horace Smith Jr. and William Clayton Smith; and two sisters, Maxine Caro and Verna May Scott.

Paul J. Schneider 1930 - 2008

OLMITZ — Paul J. Schneider, 77, died Aug. 11 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend, after a short illness. He was born Sept. 28, 1930, at Great Bend, the son of Bernard J. and Helen V. (Schreiber) Schneider. He married Rose F. Rzhia on Jan. 3, 1951, at Odin. She died Nov. 20, 1991. A lifetime resident of Olmitz, he was a farmer.

Mr. Schneider was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, both of Olmitz.

Survivors include two sons, Norbert Schneider and wife Terry of Hoisington and Robert Schneider and wife Kathy of Olmitz; four daughters, Lois McLeland and husband David of Hoisington, Linda Bahr and husband Gerald of Otis, Sheila Govert and husband Dave of Cunningham and Kim Higgason and husband Scott of Otis; a sister, Loretta Steiner and husband Hubert of Odin; 24 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Corey Bahr; two brothers, Bernard and Robert Schneider; and two sisters, infant twin sister Clarissa and Sister Helen Delores.

Helen Rose Dickson 1921 - 2008

ELLINWOOD — Helen Rose Dickson, 87, died Aug. 9 at the Kansas Medical Center in Andover. Born July 11, 1921, in Blue Lick, Mo., she was the daughter of Hiram Levi VanSteenburgh and Elizabeth Arvella Skinner. She married Stewart Dickson on June 21, 1940, in Warsaw, Mo. He died Dec. 2, 1987. She was a co-founder of the Ellinwood Rock Swap.

Mrs. Dickson was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Ellinwood and the Wichita Gem and Mineral Club.

Survivors include three sons, Jon Dickson and wife Gae of Odessa, Texas, Richard Dickson of Great Bend and Tim Dickson and Melissa of Ellinwood; a daughter, Terry Boor of Ellinwood; 14 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Beth Delaney; six brothers, Hiram, Jerry, Tom, Richard, Jim and George; and a sister, Grace Warnick.

Donald H. Humphreys 1932 - 2008

Donald H. Humphreys, an attorney in Great Bend since 1963, died Monday morning, August 4, after a brief illness.

Born in Ashland on May 16, 1932, son of John E. and Vinette (Hutcheson) Humphreys, he graduated from Ashland High School, received a BA in history from the University of Kansas, and, after three years in the U.S. Marine Corps as an artillery officer, got his Juris Doctor degree, also from KU.

He married Alice Gould in 1961, enjoyed a couple of years in California as a Special Agent in the FBI, then moved to Great Bend, where he helped Alice raise six children; Doug, Alyson, Jay, Meredy, Hutch, and Hank. During his time in Great Bend he served as Barton County Attorney for four years, as Municipal Judge of Great Bend for three years, and as vice-president of the Kansas County Attorney’s Association and president of the Barton County Bar Association. He taught a legal procedure course at Barton County Community College for several years.

Among Don’s many civic contributions, at one time or another, were: Eight years on the Great Bend USD 428 Board of Education, including two years as board president; president of Park School PTA; chairman of Cheyenne District Boy Scouts, as well as a cubmaster and Webelos leader; chairman of the Barton County Red Cross, and director, officer, and committee member of the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce; president of the Great Bend Kiwanis Club and Kiwanis District Lieutenant Governor; member of the Board of Directors of KOOD Public Television; vice-chairman of the American Legion Baseball committee, Babe Ruth Baseball coach, and an ardent spectator and supporter of many Great Bend High School and BCCC sporting events.

He was a former president of the Great Bend Civic Theater, and he had several well-received but non-Tony-Award-nominated roles in community plays over the years. Don served on the City-County Planning Commission and the BCCC Steering Committee and Board of Trustees; he had been an elder, treasurer board member and Sunday School teacher at his church,

For many years Don, a wordsmith and passionate speller, coordinated the annual staging of the Barton County Spelling Bee. He recently completed a term as a Great Bend City Council member, was a long-time member of the City Tree Board, and promoted the local geography bee.

Don was preceded in death by his three brothers, Frederick (Mike), J.P., and Richard; his sister, Maxine; and his daughter, Meredy.

Don loved reading of all sorts, telling stories, planting trees, studying maps, engaging in debates and arguments, pulling for the underdog in sports and in his legal practice, crooning hymns and ballads, hearing and relating jokes of all colors, conversing with familiars and strangers, jotting down inspirations and new words, watching the local and regional teams try their best, seeing the world, and, most of all, spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife Alice of 47 years; son Doug, of Tarpon Springs, Fla.; daughter Alyson Walter and husband Dave, of Topeka, and their two children, John, 13, and Christian, 10; son John (Jay) of Castle Rock, Colo.; son Donald (Hutch) of San Diego, Calif.; and son Richard (Hank) and wife Amy of Hesston, and their two children, Jackson, 6, and Anna, 3.

Don’s ashes will be interred next to those of his daughter Meredy’s in the Great Bend Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church in Great Bend with the Rev. Gary R. Brooks presiding. There will be a gathering of family afterward.

Instead of flowers, memorials may be made to The Donna Meredith (Meredy) Humphreys Award for Teaching at Bethany College in Lindsborg, or to the Great Bend Tree Board, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

HOISINGTON — Darlene R. Henry, 75, went to be with her husband, Kermit, on Aug. 7. She died at Rush County Nursing Home, LaCrosse. She was born July 18, 1933 at Spencer, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Edith Ann (Whitford) Riebersehl. She married Kermit H. Henry Dec. 4, 1952, at Raton, N.M. He died May 21, 2007. A resident of Hoisington since 1971, coming from Denver, Colo., she was a homemaker.

She enjoyed reading and listening to Christian music. Her family was her life.

Survivors include one son, Steve Henry and wife, Diane, Hoisington; two daughters: Judy Rice and husband John, Guymon, Okla., and Patty Carrier and husband David, Albert; one brother, Fred Riebersehl, Omaha, Neb.; one sister, Neva Lindmier, Omaha, Neb.; seven grandchildren: Laura Urban and husband Kelly, Jake Henry and wife Christi, Chris Linsner and wife Liz, Dana Van Brimmer and husband Duke, Jessi Layland and husband Tim, Jennifer Moen and husband Eivind, and Courtney Linsner; and seven great-grandchildren. OLATHE — Celia Faye Morris, 95, died Aug. 1 at Aberdeen Village in Olathe. Born Jan. 29, 1913 in Eudora she was the daughter of Ernest and Cora (Gilbreath) Belts. She lived in Newton until her marriage to Lloyd W. Morris on May 4, 1932. She was a resident of Great Bend from 1932 to 1954, moving to Prairie Village.

Survivors include a sister, Arliss Ann Koogle of Hays, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; two daughters, Kay Ann Morris White and Sara Jo Morris Seidel; a brother and two sisters.

Raymond W. Stephens 1937 - 2008

DIGHTON — Raymond W. Stephens, 70, died Aug. 4 at St. John’s Health Care Center in Hays. He was born Dec. 27, 1937, at Hollis, Okla., the son of Ernest J. and Jane (Moss) Stephens. He married Sharon Jo Bower on June 1, 1958, at Utica. Ray’s childhood years were spent in Alpena, Ark. He moved to Utica at the age of 15 and graduated from high school there. After his marriage, Ray attended John Brown University at Siloam Springs, Ark. He and his wife moved to El Dorado in 1959 and then to Hutchinson. In 1961, they moved to Dighton. Ray went to work at the lumber yard, which he would later purchase in 1973 and call Stephen’s Lumber. He also owned and operated Stephen’s Lumber Companies in Scott City, Cimarron and WaKeeney. Ray enjoyed camping and fishing with his family. He was very involved with his children and their activities when they were growing up. He enjoyed helping with the church youth groups and accompanied them on many ski trips. He loved to make things, such as barns and doll houses, for his grandchildren. In later years, Ray and Sharon enjoyed traveling in their travel trailer.

Mr. Stephens was a member of the First Christian Church in Dighton. He was a member of the Dighton Lions Club, Newmar Kansas Country Sunflowers, the Dighton Fire Department and the National Rifle Association.

Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Danny and wife Marla Stephens of Cimarron and Corey and wife Chanelle Stephens of Dighton; two daughters, Diana and husband Ed Glassman of Hays and Penni and husband Jayson Dreiling of Ellinwood; five brothers, A. J. Stephens of Billings, Mont., Dewey Stephens of Alpena, Ark., Denzil Stephens of El Dorado, Edwin Stephens and Willy Stephens, both of Wichita; eight grandchildren, Ryan Day, Ashley Dreiling, Kaylee Dreiling, Aimee Dreiling, Benjamin Raymond Glassman, Nicholas Isaac Glassman, Hunter Stephens and Porter Stephens. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Hershel Stephens and two sisters, Mary Atchley and Irma Lou Hensley.

Ralph Kingsley Almquist 1935 - 2008

HUTCHINSON — Ralph Kingsley Almquist, 72, died Aug. 6 at his home in Hutchinson. He was born Sept. 3, 1935, at Larned, to Oscar and Edna Branine Almquist. He married Barbara “Bobbie” Bullard on Sept. 3, 1957, in Pampa, Texas.

He was in the Air Force, where he became a Drill Instructor. After he was honorably discharged in 1959, he was a police officer in Pampa, Texas; captain of detectives in Great Bend, where he was named Officer of the Year; chief of police in Hoisington; sergeant of the Reno County Sheriff’s Department and then deputy sheriff with the Rice County Sheriff’s Department until retiring in 1980. He became a Hutchinson area resident in 1972 and was general manager of several Dickinson theaters — the Flag theater and South Hutch Drive-in, the Cinema Twin, Mall 4 and Mall 8 theaters — until 2004.

Mr. Almquist was a member of First Christian Church. He received Hutchinson’s “Unsung Hero” award on May 2, 2000. He had a lifelong dedication to children. He was a Cub and Boy Scout leader; District Scouting Commissioner; Camp Kanza Director; Vigil Order of the Arrow recipient; earned the Silver Beaver Award, which is the highest award an adult leader can receive. He was an Eagle Scout and was a member of the Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, of the home; two sons, Bruce Almquist and wife Candi of Inman and Brian Almquist and wife Diana of Nickerson; and five grandchildren, Terry, Tyler, Ryan, Ashley and Taylor Almquist.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Elliott Chapel in Hutchinson, with Pastor John Warring presiding. Graveside service will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Larned Cemetery, with McConnell Air Force Honor Guard. Sister Salesia Schneweis OP 1909 - 2008

Sister Salesia Schneweis, 98, died Aug. 6 in the Dominican Sisters’ convent infirmary, Great Bend. Born Oct. 18, 1909, in Odin, as Margaret Victoria Schneweis, Sister Salesia was the daughter of Joseph and Frances Schremmer Schneweis. She entered the Dominican Sisters’ Community on Aug. 3, 1925, and pronounced her first vows Aug. 16, 1928. She celebrated 80 years of religious profession this year, 2008.

Sister Salesia ministered as a nurse during most of her religious life. She worked at St. Rose Hospital, now Central Kansas Medical Center, in Great Bend; St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City; and Sacred Heart Hospital in Lamar, Colo. At the convent she served as infirmarian, and at CKMC as hostess for almost 20 years. She retired at the motherhouse in 1991.

Sister Salesia’s body will lie in state at the hospitality area of the Dominican Chapel of the Plains, 3600 Broadway, Great Bend, until the Liturgy of Christian Burial at 4 p.m. Saturday, followed by burial in the Sisters’ Resurrection Cemetery. A Scriptural wake service will be held at 5 p.m. today. Both the wake and the funeral will be held at the convent.

Colby Francis William Callahan 1987 - 2008

LARNED — Colby Francis William Callahan, 20, died Aug. 4 at Lake Wilson in Russell County. He was born Oct. 4, 1987, at Great Bend, the son of Francis P. Callahan Jr. and TaWanna Mae Mason Callahan. A longtime resident of Larned, he was an office assistant for American Digital Security. He was a 2006 graduate of Larned High School and earned an Associate of Science degree from Barton Community College in Great Bend.

Mr. Callahan was of the Christian faith. He played baseball for the Cubs, Purple Panthers, Babe Ruth, American Legion and Larned High School, all of Larned, making the All League Team in 2006. He was also a Larned Recreation coach for baseball and basketball and was a referee.

Survivors include his parents, of Larned; one sister, Shanna Danae Louise Callahan, Larned; grandmother, Hazel D. Callahan, Larned; aunts and uncles, Mary Rapp, Larned, Sam and Rhonda Stremel and Eddie and Cindy Jurgensen, all of Great Bend, and William “Buddy” and Wendi Mason, Liberty, Mo.; cousins, Cheryl Rapp, Joe Kwiatkowski, Jake Rapp, Nick Kwiatkowski, Curtis, Kerry and Kayla Schmidt, all of Larned, Austin and Tyler Stremel, Brandi, Jared Parker, Conner Scheck, Korbin Welcher, Chelsea Jurgensen, Katelyn and Kyla Jurgensen, Great Bend, Kami, Chase and Claire Mason, Liberty, Mo.; and the love of his life, Ashley Sloan, Great Bend.

He was preceded in death by a grandfather, Francis P. Callahan Sr., and grandparents, William and Wanda Mason; and an uncle, Walter N. Callahan.

Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Larned Middle School with Father Bernard Felix and David Spare presiding. Friends may call at Morell Funeral Home in Larned from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday through Monday.

Inurnment will be in the Great Bend Cemetery, Great Bend.

Juanita Mae Siefkes 1924 - 2008

POLOVADERA, N.M. — Juanita Mae Siefkes, 84, died on Aug. 5 at her home in Polovadera, N.M. She was born on July 9, 1924, in Covington, Okla., the daughter of George Harry and Viola Mae (Hueppelsheuser) Fischer. Mrs. Siefkes lived in Great Bend from 1949 to 1996, when she moved to Polovadera. She was a 1942 graduate of St. John High School. She married Ralph A.J. Siefkes on Jan. 17, 1943, in Wichita. She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Siefkes was a member of the United Church of Christ in Ellinwood.

Survivors include two sons, Larry Siefkes of Polovadera and David and Carol Siefkes of Great Bend; one brother, Kenneth Fischer of Greeley, Colo.; four grandchildren, Frederick and wife Meghan Siefkes of Moriarty, N.M., Amelia Simms and husband Douglas of Edwardsville, Ill., Darin and Angela Siefkes of Austin, Texas, and Craig Siefkes of Davenport, Iowa; and seven great-grandchildren, Anna Simms, Nicholas Hawkins, Bryan Siefkes, William Siefkes, Alyssa Siefkes, Kaelyn Siefkes and Samantha Siefkes. She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Charter Funerals in Great Bend. Burial will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery in Barton County. Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Humane Society in care of the funeral home.

Gary Alan Prose 1949 - 2008

WICHITA — Gary Alan Prose, 59, of Wichita died July 27, while vacationing with his wife Maryline and his daughter Renee on the Caribbean island of Antigua.

Gary was born on Jan. 22, 1949 in Hays. He was raised in the small town of Ness City. Shortly after graduating from college, he joined the Peace Corps and was assigned to the Caribbean island of Antigua where he taught woodworking and library science. Here, he established and supervised the construction of the library for the Claire Hall Secondary School. During his residence there he met his wife, a native to the Caribbean island of St. Lucia, Maryline. After his two-year term in the Peace Corps had expired, Gary and Maryline settled in the town of Great Bend, where they raised their two children.

He worked in Great Bend as a draftsman at Great Bend Industries for 14 years, and was most recently a Regional Manager for Primerica Financial Services in Wichita.

Gary knew no stranger and loved everyone. He was a Scout Master, an outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish, an avid bicyclist, a leader in the Central Christian International Church Fellowship, and an active member of Central Christian Church in Wichita. He was a wonderful father, husband and person.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Maryline; two children, Bryan and Renee Prose of Wichita; a sister, Evelyn Hess of Oxford; three granddaughters, and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Aug. 12th at Central Christian Church Chapel, 2900 N. Rock Rd. in Wichita.

Doris Elaine Henry 1924 - 2008

GARDEN CITY — Doris Elaine Henry, 84, died Aug. 5, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City. Born May 6, 1924 in Macksville she was the daughter of Chester C. and Ruby Pearl Barker Haynes. A resident of Garden City since 1957, moving from Great Bend, she was a school cook and a homemaker. She married Ervin Earl Henry in Macksville on May 24, 1941. He died April 23, 2003 in Garden City.

Mrs. Henry was a member of the First Assembly of God church of Garden City, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion Ladies Auxiliaries, the Finney County Senior Center and the AARP.

Survivors include a son, Ervin “Jim” Henry of Garden City; a daughter, Judy Young of Tribune; a sister, Margaret Hauck of Rochester, N.Y.; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Audrey Hager; and a brother, Bill Haynes.

Graveside services will be held at 9 a.m. today at the Sunset Memorial Gardens in Garden City, with the Pastor Don Payne presiding. The family requests memorials be given to the Doris Henry Memorial Fund in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home in Garden City.

Jesse L. Harris 1922 - 2008

Jesse L. Harris, 85, died Aug. 5 at his residence in Great Bend. He was born on Nov. 27, 1922, at Winona, Texas, the son of Jessie Lee and Mattie B. Meadows Harris. He was the second child born to this union. Jesse married the love of his life, Doris L. Jordan, on Sept. 12, 1943, at Great Bend, after a whirlwind courtship. They were married nearly 53 years until her death on July 27, 1996. To this union was born one daughter, Nancy Louise.

A resident of Great Bend since 1946, coming from Gladewater, Texas, he had worked for Bentley Hardware in Great Bend for about 10 years. He then was a wholesale hardware salesman for first, Wal Thompson Hardware of Topeka, and Blish Mize of Atchison, retiring in 1984. He then owned and operated D & J Locksmith until the time of his death.

Mr. Harris was a World War II veteran serving with the Army Air Force from 1942 to 1945. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, American Legion Argonne Post 180, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3111, Elks Lodge, Lake Barton Golf Club and American Locksmiths of America.

He was a tireless worker and volunteer. He worked on the committee to bring the B-29 Memorial to Great Bend Airfield. He also helped with tornado relief after the Hoisington tornado, and for several years he helped pack the share boxes distributed in Great Bend.

Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Cadwell and husband Charles, of Mulvane; a brother, Marvin Harris of Bay City, Texas; two sisters, Louise Boland, Cisco, Texas, and Ann Sitton of Lindale, Texas; one grandson, Jeffrey Cadwell and wife Jennifer of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Doris, brother James Harris and half-sister Pauline Buchannan.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Great Bend, with the Rev. Gary Brooks officiating. Burial will be in Great Bend Cemetery, with military honors conducted by Fort Riley Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday with the family receiving friends from 7 to 8 p.m. at Bryant Funeral Home. LaVina Clara Carrier, 81, died Aug. 2 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born May 30, 1927 in Susank, she was the daughter of Henry and Theresa Krier Hoffman. She married Herbert Carrier on Dec. 3, 1945. He died July 12, 2004. A lifetime area resident, she was a homemaker and had been a respiratory technician at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. She enjoyed bowling, playing bridge and bingo and socializing at the Senior Center.

Mrs. Carrier was a member of Prince of Peach Parish at St. Rose, Altar Society and Daughters of Isabella, all in Great Bend.

Survivors include two sons, David Carrier and wife Pattie of Albert and Thomas Carrier and wife Sandy of Mustang, Okla.; two daughters, Vickie Brown and husband Raymond of Great Bend and Nancy Tiede and husband Bruce of Parsons; two sisters, Eleanor Hines of Ellinwood and Patricia Dirks of Pawnee Rock; seven grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, 10 step-great-grandchildren; and one step-great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Connie Carrier; three brothers-in-law, Ernie Fuhr, Leo Hines and Homer Dirks; and a sister, Lucille Fuhr.

Altar Society Rosary was on Monday, followed by a vigil service with Daughters of Isabella, both at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Funeral service was Tuesday at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend with Father Floyd McKinney officiating. Burial was at the Great Bend Cemetery. HOISINGTON — Dorotha L. Surface, 83, died Aug. 4 at Rush County Nursing Home in La Crosse. She was born Jan. 25, 1925, in Wichita, the daughter of William P. and Hallie M. (Lucky) Staley. She married Doyle F. Martin in 1952. He preceded her in death on Oct. 22, 1959. She married Leroy Surface in May 1969. he preceded her in death on May 22, 1979. A resident of Hoisington since 1960, coming from Zurich, she was a homemaker.

Mrs. Surface was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Hoisington, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Post No. 3111 of Great Bend, and Fraternal Order of the Eagles No. 3061 of Hays.

Doug Herthel 1943 - 2008

OLATHE — Doug Herthel, 65, of Olathe, passed away on July 30 at the Olathe Medical Center. He was born in Hoisington, the son of Velma Beetz and Franklin Herthel. He moved to the Kansas City area shortly after starting a long and rewarding career in the dental industry.

Doug had great passion for his family, friends, and work. He married Carol Steinert in 1963 and had two children, Terri Lynn and Todd Allen, who have many fond memories of family vacations and trips to the lake. Doug loved to golf, hunt and fish, along with many activities that would take him outdoors.

On his journey of life he married Gail Hoeppner Herthel. They were married in 1991 and lived a wonderful life together in Olathe. Doug was successful in balancing his family with work and loved them all dearly. Doug was a kind and gentle soul who was a quiet giant to all those he loved.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother. He is survived by his wife Gail Herthel; two children, daughter, Terri L. Richter, Cypress, Texas, and son Todd A. Herthel of Shawnee; three grandchildren, Ashley, Brett, and Lyssa Richter of Cypress, Texas; one sister, Karen Nicholson, Great Bend. Arrangements are by D.W. SAND SPRINGS, Okla. — Robert Earl “Bobby” Morrison, 42, died July 25 at Sand Springs. He was born Sept. 3, 1965, at Great Bend, the son of Joyce and George A. Windham. He was a cosmetologist.

Survivors include his parents, of Sand Springs; a sister, Stormy Ochs and husband Andrew of Great Bend; grandmothers Maybell Windham of Sanford, N.C., and Claudia Jean Biles of Heizer; a special cousin and caregiver to Bobby, Melissa Morrison of Sand Springs; aunts and uncles, Condray and Connie Windham of Sanford, N.C., Ronald and Beverly Windham, Vicky and Larry Goodwin, Kitty Windham and Geraldine Windham, all also of Sanford, Dennis and Josie Morrison and George Morrison, all of Sand Springs, Craig and Becky Morrison, Gary Morrison and Cora Murphy, all of Hutchinson, and Virginia Rowen of Great Bend; and numerous cousins and second cousins from North Carolina and Kansas. HESSTON — Lou Isla Belle Unruh, 85, died July 31. She was born Sept. 5, 1922, at Albert, the daughter of Howard and Mildred (Saurbaugh) Cummings. She had worked at the Great Bend Office of Kansas Power and Light for 39 years.

Survivors include two sisters, Louise Bird of Lenoir, N.C., and Shirley Keim of Yakima, Wash.; and one brother, Artis Cummings of Jenison, Mich. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Unruh, one sister and three brothers.

Visitation will be from 8 to 9 a.m. Tuesday at Miller Funeral Home in Hesston. A graveside service will follow at 9:30 a.m. at the Restlawn Garden of Memory, on West Highway 50, Newton. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel at Schowalter Villa in Hesston. HUTCHINSON — Michael A. Espinoza, 59, died July 31 at Hospice House, Hutchinson. He was born April 6, 1949, the son of Abraham and Delores Rioz Espinoza. He attended schools in Newton. Mike married Felicitas J. Mendoza. She survives. He was employed by the Santa Fe Railroad for 28 years.

Other survivors include two sons, Marcos A. Espinoza, and Nicholas M. Espinoza of Hutchinson; a daughter, Angela R. Espinoza-Gideon; his mother, Delores Rioz of Newton; three sisters, Antonia Espinoza of Northridge, Calif., Anna Sanchez, and Belinda Curiel of Newton; 10 grandchildren, one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his father, two brothers, Danny and Marcos Espinoza, and a granddaughter baby, Ava Espinoza.

Eugene William Bowyer 1931 - 2008

CHICO, Texas — Eugene William Bowyer, 77, a retired oilfield pumper, died July 30 in Chico. Eugene was born Feb. 7, 1931, to William Thomas and Helen Louise (Schroeder) Bowyer in Pawnee Rock. He married June Eckert on Jan. 25, 1953, in Albert.

Mr. Bowyer was a member of the Morris Memorial Methodist Church, a past member of the Chico ISD School Board, a past member of the Chico Volunteer Fire Department, and he was confirmed in the Peace Lutheran Church.

Left behind to cherish his memory are his wife of 55 1/2 years, June Bowyer; sons, Bill Bowyer of Decatur, Doug Bowyer of Chico and Steve Bowyer of Houston; 17 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and a son-in-law, Norman Jones of Weatherford. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Sandra Jones, and infant twin sons, Ronald and Donald Bowyer.

Funeral will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Morris Memorial Methodist Church. Burial will be at the Chico Cemetery. The Rev. Elaine Bussey will officiate. ELLINWOOD — Elizabeth Suzanne Apel, 91, died July 28 in San Antonio, Texas. She was born May 27, 1917, at Silica, the daughter of Peter and Mary Elizabeth Smith Apel. She was a resident of San Antonio. She had retired from her profession as an accountant in 1986.

Survivors include cousins, Robert L. Smith, Becky Holmes, Christine Cabinass and husband, Todd, and Tim Smith and wife, Amy, Sally Sigley, Norman Apel and wife Gladys, Theresa Wornkey and husband Jim, Harry Apel and wife Von and Jeanie Miller and husband Dick.
