Larry Robert Marquez 1941 - 2009

Larry Robert Marquez, 68, passed away at his home in Aptos, Calif. He was born July 10, 1941, at St. Rose Hospital in Great Bend. He was preceded in death by his father Frank J. Garcia. He lived with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Gutierrez, through his childhood years along with their seven children. Mrs. Gutierrez made the commitment to raise Larry like one of her own where he was treated like a brother by his aunt and uncles.

He was a beautiful child with long curly locks of hair. One day his aunt Lucille, who was so enamored by him, took him to school with her when she was in Jr. High and he spent the whole day with her at school. He was his mother’s child but he belonged to everyone.

When he entered high school, he wanted to play football, but his grandmother would not sign the permission papers and instead told him that he could play in the band. That was the beginning of a successful music career that carried over into the Marine Drum and Bugle Corps. Mr. Marquez was the drum major for the high school marching band in his senior year. He also was a member of the Argonne Rebels Drum and Bugle Corps winning numerous awards.

He graduated from high school in 1959 and was offered a scholarship to attend Fort Hays State for his artistic talents. He turned down the Fort Hays offer and instead enrolled at Wichita State University. He interrupted his education to join the U.S. Marines where he was a composer and trumpet player in the Marine Drum and Bugle corps. Larry was stationed in Washington, D.C., for most of his tour of duty, but he did travel all over the United States performing, and playing “Taps” for fallen comrades.

He returned to Great Bend after his discharge from the Marines and worked for a local moving van company. But he wanted to pursue his artistic talents and felt that the opportunities were not in Great Bend so he moved and settled in California. He pursued a fine arts education and spent several years working on Disney projects for an independent scenic studio. He later moved to northern California where he and his wife Betty owned and operated a very successful family restaurant for more than 22 years in Capitola, Calif. He also operated his own stained glass business and marketed his unique depictions of pastoral landscapes through Nieman Marcus in San Francisco. Needless to say, he not only was very talented but he was also very ambitious.

Larry devoted much of his free time and talents to community service. He served as president of the Family Service Association of Pajaro Valley. He sat on the board of directors of many associations and foundations throughout his community and the state. He also was a member of the Fallen Office Foundation and rose to the position of first commandant of the 711 Marine Corps League.

Larry is survived by his wife betty of the home; his mother, Norma Mounkes of Great Bend; his sister Gloria Schamber, and brother-in-law Linus Schamber; aunts Alberta Delgado, Kathryn Vesta, Dolores Lapka, and an uncle Daniel Gutierrez. An aunt, Lucille Zero, and an uncle, Ishmael Gutierrez preceded him in death, all who shared the home and love of Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Gutierrez; nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and many second cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Great Bend. All friends and relatives are invited to attend. Memorial contributions can be made to the Dominican Hospital Pediatric Program.
