Genevieve Maria Murphy 1913 - 2008

KINGMAN — Genevieve Maria Murphy was born on the Fourth of July in the year 1913, in Pfeifer, Kan. She was one of six children born to Anna and Andrew Pfeifer, and has one surviving sister, Flossie Williams. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Lawrence Pfeifer, and her sisters, Mary Lawler, Eleanor Carlisle and Barbara McCallion.

She and her siblings grew up on a farm and were witness to the dust bowls and survivors of the Great Depression. She married James Murphy, who died in 1951. Together they traveled the western United States, looking for work in the oil fields during hard times. They settled in Hays, where they purchased an entire block on east 6th Street. Here her siblings all built homes and together, they raised their children. Gen worked most of her life as a waitress, first at Dan’s Café, and later at the Holiday Inn in Hays. One year, the Hays Chamber named her “Friendliest Person.”

She is survived by two daughters, Dolly Aumiller and husband Don of Kingman, and Kathleen Lane and husband William of Half Moon Bay, Calif.; five grandchildren, Sheryl Cheely and husband Ray, of Great Bend, Linda Sebastian and husband Steve, of Kingman, Mike Aumiller and wife Evie, of Kingman, Julie Propp, Menlo Park, Calif., and Jim Propp and wife Denise, of San Francisco, Calif.; nine great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. Each one she loved in a special way.

Gen, as her family and friends, called her, was known for her kind heart and generosity. Her helping hand reached out to all of us during her life. She loved flowers, and at the age of 95, still had her own flower garden.

Her family is filled with fond memories of Fourth of July and Christmas celebrations and growing up with many aunts, uncles and cousins as neighbors.

Her family will never forget her and will always carry a part of her with them. Their hope is to pass the legacy she gave of family, generosity and love to their children and that they will pass it on to their own children.

No words can describe the impact that she had on so many lives. She will be missed … and remembered when someone is seen with a pink sweater or planting yellow flowers.

Private services will be held by the family at a later date.
